9-Year-Old Entrepreneur Opens A Coffee Shop That Employs People With Special Needs
Meet 9-Year-Old Entrepreneur Camden Myers — The Boy Behind a Coffee Shop That Empowers People with Special Needs
At just nine years old, Camden “Cam” Myers is proving that determination, compassion, and creativity can brew something far greater than coffee. Born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Cam’s life began with unimaginable challenges: a traumatic brain injury at birth left him facing significant developmental and social hurdles (Today Show, 2018). Yet instead of letting those obstacles define him, he transformed them into motivation — and built a business that’s inspiring people nationwide.
From a Pop-Up Stand to a Permanent Café
What began as a modest pop-up stand called “Cam’s Coffee Creations” has now grown into a full-fledged coffee shop with a powerful mission: to create employment and training opportunities for individuals with disabilities. The shop, which officially opened its first permanent location inside the Green Tree Community Center in Winston-Salem, represents the culmination of years of family effort and community support (CNN, 2018).
Cam’s mother, Latasha Lewis, who has been his greatest advocate, described the milestone as “a dream realized.”
“With the right support, kids and teens and individuals with special needs really can accomplish anything,” she told reporters at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. “Today is our mission — our vision — in action.” (WFMY News 2, 2018)
The shop serves locally roasted and globally sourced coffee blends, each cup symbolizing inclusion and empowerment. But what truly sets Cam’s Coffee Creations apart is its staff: students from Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools with various disabilities who receive hands-on job training and life skills behind the counter.
A Recipe for Inclusion and Impact
The café’s baked goods come from BeSpoke Confections, a local bakery employing adults with autism, making the entire operation a hub of community collaboration (Winston-Salem Journal, 2018). Together, these partnerships reflect a growing movement across the U.S. toward neurodiverse employment models, where people with different abilities can contribute meaningfully to the workforce.
Cam’s mission extends far beyond profit. As he told The Huffington Post (2018):
“I like helping people. I like working. I like making money — and I like donating money to people who don’t have houses or food.”
His generosity isn’t just talk. A portion of proceeds from Cam’s Coffee Creations supports local homelessness and hunger relief programs, further cementing his reputation as a young changemaker with a heart for service.
A Family’s Vision Turned Movement
Cam’s story is also one of perseverance through family strength. His mother, Latasha, recalls that after years of therapy and homeschooling, Cam began to express a desire to “make and sell something that helps people.” What started as a simple idea — brewing coffee at local events and farmers’ markets — soon gained traction, with local media and disability advocates rallying behind him.
National outlets like NBC News and People Magazine later highlighted his journey as an example of how early entrepreneurship and inclusive thinking can transform entire communities (NBC News, 2019; People, 2019).
Today, Cam’s Coffee Creations is not just a shop — it’s a symbol of possibility for children with special needs everywhere.
Brewing Up Bigger Dreams
Even as he celebrates this milestone, Cam is already looking to the future. His next big dream? Launching a mobile coffee truck that can bring his inclusive business model to other cities and schools across North Carolina — and eventually, the nation (Good Morning America, 2019).
The young entrepreneur is actively welcoming donations and partnerships from supporters who share his vision of empowerment and equality.
“Every person deserves a chance to work and feel proud,” his mother said. “Cam reminds us that disability is not inability — it’s just a different way of doing great things.”
Changing Perceptions, One Cup at a Time
Camden’s story is more than heartwarming; it’s reshaping how communities view disability and entrepreneurship. Experts say his model could inspire a new wave of inclusive small businesses that emphasize both compassion and sustainability (Forbes, 2019).
In a world where success is often measured by profit margins, Cam’s Coffee Creations stands as a gentle but powerful reminder: the real measure of success is the difference you make in other people’s lives.
Here’s to Cam — the 9-year-old visionary proving that the best brews come from the heart. ☕💛
