When Boston Animal Control officers arrived to check on the nest and the recently hatched cygnets, they were met with a surprising and deeply moving sight: the male swan had taken over the nest, shielding his young beneath his wings with gentle care and unwavering attention. Photographer Matthew Raifman was on hand to document this extraordinary moment. He managed to capture the swan cradling his babies, even carrying them on his back while gliding across the lake—a behavior usually seen in mother swans. “I noticed something was different right away,” Raifman shared with WBZ-TV. “The daddy swan had all the newborn cygnets perched on top of him. He’s stepped up in the most incredible way. It’s so heartwarming. The family has been through a lot, but their spirits remain high.”
