As he nears 100, Dick Van Dyke, 99, makes a touching confession about his life

At 99 years old, Dick Van Dyke remains a symbol of joy, movement, and timeless charm. The legendary performer, known for unforgettable roles in musicals such as Bye Bye Birdie, Mary Poppins, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, continues to live with energy, grace, and an unmistakable love for life.

Over the course of his remarkable career, Van Dyke earned countless honors for his contributions to film and television. He received five Primetime Emmy Awards, a Tony Award, and a Grammy. In 1995, he was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame and later received the Screen Actors Guild’s highest honor, the SAG Life Achievement Award. He also holds a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2021, his lifetime of work was recognized once again when he was honored with the Kennedy Center Honors.

Yet as he approaches his 100th birthday, Van Dyke has chosen to speak not about fame, but about life itself — aging, love, and the emotional changes that come with time.

In a deeply personal diary entry shared with The Times, he admitted that growing older is not always easy, even when embraced with gratitude. “It’s frustrating to feel diminished in the world, physically and socially,” he wrote. “Almost all of my visiting with folks has to happen at my house.”

He also spoke about the emotional toll of watching the world change. “Daily, I spiral into anguish over the mayhem and cruelty being inflicted on the entire world,” he confessed. “So yes, I suppose at certain times of day, I am the grumpy old man who yells at the TV.”

Despite these struggles, love continues to shape and sustain him — especially the love he shares with his wife, Arlene Silver. “Without question, our ongoing romance is the most important reason I have not withered away into a hermetic grouch,” he wrote with warmth and gentle humor.

Together with Arlene, Van Dyke formed a vocal group called The Vantastix in 2020. The group, which includes Eric Bradley, Bryan Chadima, Mike Mendyke, and Van Dyke himself, released a charming performance video to commemorate his and Arlene’s 10th wedding anniversary. Their rendition of “Everybody Loves a Lover” captured the hearts of many, with viewers celebrating not only his enduring talent, but also his visible joy.

When they first began dating, their age difference — Arlene is 46 years his junior — drew attention. Yet their bond has proven that connection and companionship extend far beyond numbers. Their shared laughter, music, and mutual admiration speak louder than any criticism ever could.

Even in his late 90s, Van Dyke refuses to surrender to bitterness or despair. “No one is genetically miserable,” he reflected. “We all have the capacity for a joyful life.”

His longevity, he believes, is not solely the result of luck or good genes. Instead, it comes from a deliberate decision to resist negativity. “I’ve made it to 99 in no small part because I have stubbornly refused to give in to the bad stuff — failures, defeats, personal losses, loneliness, and the physical and emotional pains of aging,” he explained.

In a world often focused on decline, Dick Van Dyke stands as a reminder that optimism is a choice, joy is a discipline, and love is the greatest medicine of all.
