Crush a handful of these leaves and put them in the room

Just use a handful of leaves from your garden and your whole family will be free from mosquitoes—without using a single drop of toxic spray.

There are many different ways to repel mosquitoes—like mosquito sprays, coils, or electric traps. However, you can also use natural ingredients already available at home to keep mosquitoes away.

Repel mosquitoes with mugwort leaves

Mugwort is not only beneficial for health but also very effective in repelling mosquitoes.

Here are several ways you can use mugwort to do so:

1. Fumigate the house with mugwort

Take a handful of dried mugwort leaves and roll them into a small bundle. Place the dried mugwort into a ceramic bowl and light it. Let the fragrant smoke spread throughout your house, especially in areas where mosquitoes tend to gather.

Dried mugwort is harmless to the body and emits a gentle aroma that helps eliminate unpleasant odors in your home.

When fumigating, keep your doors and windows open to ensure proper ventilation and avoid suffocation.

2. Mop the floor with mugwort water

Put a handful of mugwort leaves into a container and pour boiling water over them. Let the essence dissolve into the water, then strain out the leaves once it cools down. Use the mugwort-infused water to mop your floors.

In the summer, this not only drives mosquitoes away but also leaves behind a pleasant herbal scent.

3. Make a natural mosquito spray

You can soak mugwort leaves in hot water to extract their essence. After that, strain the liquid, pour it into a spray bottle, and close the cap.

Spray this water on your arms and legs before going outside. The scent of mugwort will deter mosquitoes from coming close or biting you.

4. Make a herbal pillow

Put dried mugwort leaves into a pillow. The aroma can soothe your nerves, improve sleep, and relieve fatigue. It also helps repel mosquitoes. This method is safe for both the elderly and children.

5. Soak your feet with mugwort

Boil mugwort leaves and use the water for a foot soak. This promotes blood circulation, prevents colds, and relieves joint pain. The light scent that lingers on your skin after soaking also helps keep mosquitoes away.

Other quick and effective natural mosquito repellents

Use dried orange or tangerine peels

Don’t throw away citrus peels after eating oranges or tangerines—they contain essential oils that effectively repel mosquitoes.

Simply burn a few pieces of dried citrus peel. The fragrance will repel mosquitoes while making your home smell fresh and pleasant.

Although the effect lasts only a few hours, it still provides a natural and refreshing atmosphere indoors.

Grow mosquito-repelling plants

In summer, plant some mosquito-repelling herbs in your yard, balcony, or by the window. You can enjoy their fragrance while keeping mosquitoes away.

Such plants include: mint, rosemary, lavender, coriander, lemongrass, and sunflower.

Use natural essential oils

Certain essential oils are very effective in repelling mosquitoes, such as eucalyptus lemon oil, lavender, peppermint, tea tree, and citronella.

Except for lavender oil (which should be diluted before applying to the skin), the others can be applied directly, or used in diffusers to purify the air and keep mosquitoes away.

To make a natural mosquito spray:

  • 6 drops of citronella essential oil

  • 3 drops of sunflower oil

  • 3 drops of lavender essential oil

  • 5 ml of alcohol

  • 45 ml of distilled water

Mix all ingredients in a spray bottle. Shake well before use and spray directly on skin or clothes before going outside for maximum protection.

Repel mosquitoes with garlic

Try growing a small pot with 2–3 garlic bulbs and place it by a window. Garlic sprouts easily, even without soil. For longer use, plant it in a small pot with some soil.

The natural oils from garlic bulbs and leaves release a scent that drives mosquitoes away and prevents them from returning.
