DC Man Gifts Woman With Hair Salon After She Donates One Of Her Kidneys To Him

This story is a powerful reminder that acts of kindness often come full circle. Washington, D.C. salon owner Chet Bennett made headlines after gifting his longtime mentee, Acia Williams, her very own hair salon—an extraordinary gesture of gratitude after Williams donated one of her kidneys to save his life.

According to CNN (CNN), Williams and Bennett have shared a close bond for more than two decades. Bennett owns the beauty college where Williams launched her career, and for years she managed one of the many salons he operates throughout the city. Williams had always dreamed of owning a salon of her own, and Bennett had consistently encouraged her ambition, offering mentorship and unwavering support.

“Everybody loves him, because he’s just a genuine person,” Williams said. “He’s always been a giver, and he’s always helpful. He’s had hundreds and hundreds of students.”

The turning point came in 2018, when Williams learned that Bennett was gravely ill. He had been undergoing dialysis for some time and shared in a Facebook post that he urgently needed a kidney donor. Dozens of people commented, offering prayers or expressing interest in helping, and Williams initially assumed he would soon receive a transplant. But as weeks turned into months, she noticed nothing was happening—and felt compelled to act.

She filled out the donor application and later described feeling spiritually guided in her decision. “God was in my spirit, just like, ‘You are his match, and you’re going to donate your kidney to him,’” she recalled.

A short time later, a nurse called to confirm what Williams had sensed: she was indeed a compatible match. Bennett expressed deep gratitude for her courage and compassion. “Even though the Lord told her, that doesn’t mean she had to do it,” he said.

After undergoing extensive testing to ensure she was healthy enough to donate, Williams successfully donated her kidney on April 9, 2019. The surgery was a success, and during their recovery, Bennett told Williams he planned to give her one of his salons—an offer that left her stunned. Although they had casually discussed the possibility of her purchasing a shop one day, she never imagined he would one day hand her the keys outright.

Bennett returned to work by September, and by October he had completed the transfer of ownership. “I can’t begin to thank you enough for you giving me life,” he told her. “But we can start with you making your dream a reality by having your own salon.”

The newly named salon, A New Image By Acia, celebrated its grand opening this week in Washington, D.C., located at 705 Florida Avenue NW. The moment marked not only the beginning of Williams’s next chapter as a business owner but also a powerful testament to loyalty, mentorship, and the life-changing impact of generosity.

Reputable outlets such as The Washington Post (The Washington Post) and Good Morning America (GMA) have highlighted similar stories of live organ donors transforming the lives of friends, coworkers, and even strangers—underscoring how profound these connections can become.

Congratulations to Acia Williams and Chet Bennett on a remarkable journey defined by compassion, gratitude, and dreams fulfilled.
