Doritos Goes Dye-Free: PepsiCo Shifts to Natural Colors



PepsiCo, the global snacks and beverages company behind popular brands such as Doritos and Cheetos, has announced that it is removing all petroleum-based synthetic dyes from its chip products and switching to natural color alternatives. According to the company, this decision is part of a broader strategy to provide cleaner ingredients as consumers increasingly demand foods with fewer artificial additives.

The move comes amid growing concerns about the potential health risks associated with synthetic food dyes. While conclusive evidence linking these additives directly to cancer in humans remains limited, numerous laboratory and animal studies have raised red flags. Research has shown that certain synthetic colorants may be associated with organ toxicity, genetic damage, tumor development, and other adverse effects when consumed in high amounts over long periods. One example is Red 40 (Allura Red AC), which has been linked to liver and kidney tumors in animal studies conducted under high-dose conditions.

In addition to laboratory findings, nutrition experts have also noted a broader pattern: ultra-processed foods containing artificial colors and additives are often associated with poorer overall diet quality. These foods tend to be high in refined carbohydrates, unhealthy fats, and excess sodium, while lacking essential nutrients. As a result, regular consumption of such products has been correlated with higher risks of chronic health conditions, including obesity, cardiovascular disease, and certain types of cancer.

In light of this evidence and changing consumer attitudes, PepsiCo’s announcement represents a significant shift for one of the world’s leading snack manufacturers. However, the company has clarified that the original versions of Doritos and Cheetos will remain on the market for now. The new, dye-free options are being introduced as an additional choice for consumers who prefer products made with more natural ingredients, rather than as a complete replacement of existing formulations.

By transitioning to natural color alternatives, PepsiCo aims to maintain the bold, recognizable flavors and visual appeal that fans expect from its products. At the same time, the company is responding to growing calls for transparency and “clean-label” foods—products that are made with simpler, more recognizable ingredients. For consumers, the most noticeable change may be in the appearance of the chips. Without synthetic dyes, the color of Doritos and Cheetos may appear slightly lighter or less vivid than before. However, the company has emphasized that the taste, texture, and overall eating experience will remain the same.
