Inserting scissors into the rice bin: A good tip that brings many uses, but who doesn't know it's too wasteful

Did you know that simply inserting scissors into a container of rice can bring many benefits?

Rice is an essential staple food that every household cannot live without. Whether in the city or countryside, we use rice to cook at least two meals a day.

In fact, besides being a food source, rice also has many wonderful uses in daily life. Here are some suggestions for you:

Clean rusty scissors

One amazing use is that rice can be used to prevent rust on scissors. Rusty scissors are a common problem that causes discomfort when using them. In this case, we can use rice to solve it.

Simply insert the scissors into the rice. Rice has excellent moisture-absorbing properties, which can help clean and prevent rust effectively.

This trick can also be applied to rusty knives with great results.

Speed up the ripening of fruits

Usually, for easier transportation and storage, farmers harvest fruits while they are still unripe. Therefore, when you bring them home, they may not be evenly ripe. To speed up the ripening process, you can bury the fruits in rice. This is based on the principle that the ideal temperature for ripening is 40–55°C and humidity at 85–90%.

In the past, people used methods like placing fruits near the kitchen, sealing them in ovens, or burying them in rice containers to take advantage of the warmth. This helps the fruit ripen evenly in color. Since rice containers can retain ethylene gas very well, placing fruits in rice will make them ripen faster compared to just leaving them on the counter or in paper or plastic bags. The deeper you bury the fruit, the faster it will ripen.

Clean deep-bottomed jars

Teapots, glass jars, and similar containers have deep bottoms and narrow openings that make it hard to reach inside for cleaning.

To solve this, just put a handful of rice into the jar, add a few drops of dish soap, and pour in water about two-thirds full. Then cover the opening with your hand and shake vigorously until the inside is clean.

Make a heating pad

Put rice into a clean cloth bag and microwave it for about 30 seconds. You can then use it as a hot compress to ease muscle pain or soreness.

Preserve eggs

Chicken eggs are a common food in our lives, and many people like to stock them up. If you buy a large quantity of eggs and your refrigerator is full, you can use this rice preservation method:

Prepare a container of rice. Arrange the eggs in the rice with the large end facing up and the small end downward. Do not bury all the eggs completely—leave about half of each egg exposed to allow airflow. This helps the eggs stay fresh longer.

Dry a wet phone

If you accidentally drop your phone into water, quick action is necessary to prevent damage. First, remove the phone from the water immediately and gently dry the surface. To ensure the phone is completely dry, you can bury it in rice. Rice absorbs water very effectively and can help remove moisture trapped inside the device.
