Inside Angelina Jolie’s plans to move from ‘unrecognizable’ America to Cambodia following Brad Pitt divorce

The movie star is reportedly preparing to establish residences in three distinct regions of the world — Cambodia, France, and Africa — with each locale carrying deeply personal significance, according to a source cited by Us Weekly on Wednesday.

Angelina Jolie, 50, chose these regions based in part on her children’s birthplaces and adoption roots: her eldest son Maddox, now 24, was adopted from Cambodia; Zahara, 20, and Shiloh, 19, were born in Ethiopia and Namibia respectively; her twins Knox and Vivienne, now 17, were born in Nice, France. Jolie also shares a son, Pax, born in Vietnam, with ex-husband Brad Pitt. (Us Weekly)

A source told Us Weekly that now that her youngest children will turn 18 in July, Jolie feels ready to pursue this long-held dream. “They’re all very special places,” the insider said of the locations she’s chosen. “She has dear friends in all of those areas who she considers confidantes and family.”

This vision of relocating abroad isn’t new for Jolie. Back in 2019, she told Harper’s Bazaar, “I would love to live abroad and will do so as soon as my children are 18. Right now, I’m having to base where their father chooses to live.” (Harper’s Bazaar, cited in multiple reports)

Though Jolie still loves Los Angeles, another source told Us Weekly that she views its chapter as complete. “She feels [L.A.] has served its purpose” and is “ready for her next chapter.” The source added, “Angelina will be back and forth to LA for work but won’t call LA her home.” (Us Weekly)

In August, Page Six reported that Jolie had listed her California mansion — a historic property once belonging to filmmaker Cecil B. DeMille, with six bedrooms — for sale, signaling her intention to shift her base of life. (Page Six)

During her appearance at the 2025 San Sebastián International Film Festival in Spain, Jolie gave voice to her deep disillusionment with the current climate in the U.S. She said,

“I have to say that I love my country and I don’t, at this time, recognize my country. … Anything, anywhere that divides or limits personal expressions and freedoms [for anyone] I think is very dangerous.”

Her comment came amid broader debates over free speech in America, and she framed her own worldview as fundamentally international and interconnected. (The Guardian)

Jolie’s property holdings and humanitarian roots also reinforce the logic of her planned transition. She has long had ties to Cambodia: in 2003, she purchased land in Battambang province, adjacent to the Cardamom Mountains, initially to support a nature reserve and later develop the Maddox Jolie Project. Her decision to relocate doesn’t necessarily mean a complete cut from the U.S. A source says she will continue to travel to Los Angeles for film obligations, but it will no longer be her base of life. (Us Weekly)

Meanwhile, Jolie and Pitt’s divorce was officially settled in late 2024 after an eight-year legal battle. (Reuters) Their legal battles, however, continue in other domains — notably over the ownership and management of their shared French winery, Château Miraval. (Real Estate Australia)

If her relocation plans come to fruition, Jolie will join a growing number of celebrities redefining “home” as a global concept rather than a single address. She aims to anchor herself where her children’s histories and her heart have already planted roots.
