At just three and a half years old, Liwia, a little girl from Poland, is battling a disease so rare that most doctors have never seen it: Alexander disease, a fatal neurodegenerative disorder that affects the brain and spinal cord. Her diagnosis came like a thunderclap—unexpected, overwhelming, and life-altering.

Alexander disease is caused by mutations in the GFAP gene, leading to the buildup of abnormal proteins in the brain. For Liwia, this means progressive loss of motor skills, seizures, and difficulty swallowing. There is no known cure. But her family refuses to give up.

Her aunt and uncle, Marcin and Karolina Gardocki, have launched a GoFundMe campaign titled “Liwia’s ONLY chance to fight Alexander disease!” to raise funds for experimental treatments and specialized care. The goal is to give Liwia a fighting chance—to slow the disease’s progression and preserve her quality of life.
