Man Mocks Wife for Gaining Weight after Giving Birth, Finds Her Diary after She’s Hospitalized — Story of the Day
A Husband Mocks His Wife for Gaining Weight After Twins, But Everything Changes When She Collapses
Emily Davis had always been the kind of woman who could do it all. As a senior accountant at a prestigious firm in San Jose, California, she juggled spreadsheets by day and stirred soup pots by night. Despite her demanding 9-to-5 job, her home was always spotless, dinner was always warm, and her husband Ryan never had to ask twice for clean laundry or a homemade meal.
She was up at 5 a.m. sharp every day—cooking breakfast for both of them, getting herself ready for work, and still arriving on time at the office. When she returned home in the evening, she’d immediately start prepping dinner, even if she was drained from a long day.
For a while, Ryan had been a supportive partner, helping her with chores and sharing the load. But everything began to change after Emily gave birth to their twins.
Emily and Ryan had been happily married for three years. After trying to conceive for a long time, the day Emily saw two pink lines on the pregnancy test felt like a miracle. The couple had cried tears of joy together, imagining a future with their little ones.
Once the babies were born, Emily decided to take a break from her job to focus on motherhood. She embraced her role as a stay-at-home mom with open arms, believing it was a once-in-a-lifetime phase she didn’t want to miss. But while she viewed it as an opportunity to nurture her children, Ryan began seeing her as “lazy.”
"All you do is lounge on the couch these days, Emily. Why don’t you start exercising or something? Look at yourself—gaining so much weight after pregnancy? A little workout won’t kill you," Ryan often mocked her with a smirk.
Emily tried to brush it off at first, attributing his rudeness to stress from work. But the constant criticism began to wear her down emotionally. The man who once encouraged her now seemed distant and indifferent.
She noticed Ryan no longer made time for her, barely acknowledged her efforts around the house, and ignored her attempts to connect. When she brought up the idea of spending quality time together, he’d deflect and head straight to bed. One evening, unable to take the coldness anymore, she confronted him.
"Ryan, I know you’ve been overwhelmed with work, but something's changed. You seem so disconnected lately. Can we talk about it?"
"Disconnected? Emily, can you just let me work in peace? Maybe if you spent half your time on self-care instead of whining, things would be different. When was the last time you actually looked at yourself in the mirror?"
Tears welled up in Emily’s eyes. The man she’d shared her dreams and struggles with was now treating her like a burden.
"Are you crying now? Great! Go ahead, make me the bad guy. But tell me something—are you gaining weight on purpose so I’ll leave you? Is there someone else you’re seeing? Where do you even go so early every morning?"
"Are you serious right now, Ryan? You think I’m cheating on you?"
But Ryan didn’t care to listen. He stormed off, leaving Emily in tears. That night, the silence between them grew heavier than ever.
Hours later, a loud crash startled Ryan. Assuming it came from the twins' nursery, he ran out—only to find Emily collapsed on the kitchen floor.
"Emily?! What happened? Emily!"
She didn’t respond. He immediately called 911 and rushed her to the hospital, asking their neighbor, Mrs. Barlow, to watch the twins.
Doctors later informed him that Emily had collapsed from extreme exhaustion and malnutrition. She had been under severe physical and emotional stress.
Back home, Ryan sat on the edge of their bed, guilt crashing over him. “How could she be so weak? She’s been home resting…” he muttered, confused. As he adjusted the sheets, a small leather-bound diary fell to the floor.
It was Emily’s personal journal. Hesitant at first, Ryan opened it.
The first entry stopped him cold.
"Dear Journal, today I became a mom! Holding Olivia and Ethan in my arms was the most magical moment of my life. I hope I can be the kind of mom they deserve. Ryan looked so emotional—it made me love him even more."
He kept reading. Each page revealed how deeply Emily loved their children and how hard she was trying to manage everything. But then he reached entries that tore at his heart.
"I feel like Ryan doesn’t love me anymore. He says I’m lazy and fat. But I’ve been waking up at 4:30 a.m. to go to that crazy gym across town. The diet they gave me makes me sick, but I want to look good for Ryan. I don’t want to lose him."
"Maybe he’s right. Maybe I’m not enough anymore. But I just want to feel loved again."
Ryan’s hands trembled. All this time, she had been fighting a silent battle—one he never even noticed.
The next day, he arrived at the hospital with a bouquet of sunflowers—her favorite—and a handwritten card:
“Get well soon, Emily. The kids and I miss you. The house feels empty without you. And I finally understand how much you were doing for all of us. I’m sorry.”
Emily’s eyes filled with tears when she saw the card.
"Ryan… Thank you," she whispered.
"You don’t need to thank me, Em. You need to forgive me. I was blind and cruel. You’re the strongest woman I know. I’m so sorry for everything I said."
When Emily was discharged a few days later, Ryan welcomed her home with a surprise candlelit dinner. He had decorated the dining room, dimmed the lights, and even played their wedding song in the background.
"Mrs. Emily Davis," he said, bowing slightly and holding out his hand, "May I have this dance?"
They swayed slowly, tears in their eyes, holding each other tightly.
From that day on, Ryan was a changed man. He became more present, more helpful, and more loving. He accompanied Emily on morning walks, helped feed the twins, and made it a point to say “I love you” every single day.
Emily still goes to the gym, but no longer to chase unrealistic beauty standards. Now, her goal is health, not size.
What can we learn from this story?
-
Love is not about appearances. Ryan forgot why he fell in love with Emily—her strength, kindness, and devotion—not her size.
-
Unspoken efforts matter. Emily had been working hard behind the scenes, and Ryan only realized this after reading her journal.
-
Appreciation can change everything. A little understanding and kindness can bring a relationship back from the brink.
