Miss Universe winner, contestants walk out of ceremony over executive’s ‘disrespectful’ comment to beauty queen

During a Miss Universe 2025 pre-pageant event in Bangkok, Thailand, tensions erupted when Nawat Itsaragrisil, a Thai pageant executive, publicly berated Miss Mexico — Fátima Bosch — in front of dozens of contestants. The incident, which was caught on video, quickly spread online and led several delegates to walk out in protest.

It all began when Itsaragrisil confronted Bosch during a rehearsal, accusing her of refusing to participate in certain promotional activities for the host country. Speaking through a microphone, he demanded, “Mexico, where are you? I heard you’re not supporting Thailand.” The exchange became heated when Bosch stood up to respond, insisting she had simply been following her national director’s instructions.

Witnesses say Itsaragrisil repeatedly interrupted Bosch and eventually mocked her intelligence, calling her “stupid” or “a dummy,” depending on the translation. Bosch, visibly shaken, defended herself, saying, “Because I have a voice. You are not respecting me as a woman.” (People.com)

When the argument escalated, Itsaragrisil ordered security staff to intervene, warning that anyone who walked out would be disqualified. Instead of backing down, several contestants — including reigning Miss Universe Victoria Kjær Theilvig of Denmark — stood up and left the room in solidarity with Bosch. (The Times) Theilvig later stated that what she witnessed “wasn’t just unprofessional, it was humiliating,” adding that “to trash another girl publicly is beyond disrespectful.”

After the footage went viral, the Miss Universe Organization released a statement reaffirming its commitment to maintaining “dignity, respect, and a safe space for all participants.” They announced that senior officials would fly to Thailand to oversee the rest of the competition and that Itsaragrisil’s role would be reviewed. The controversy has also sparked political reactions. In Mexico, President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her support for Bosch, praising her for defending her dignity and declaring, “Women look stronger when they raise their voice, not when they stay silent.” (El País)

Meanwhile, several contestants and fans around the world have criticized the culture of fear and control that sometimes surrounds pageants. Many argue that the incident reveals deeper issues about how power and professionalism are handled in international competitions. Bosch has not withdrawn from the event, but she stated that she hopes this experience will lead to “more respect and accountability” in the industry.
