No One Shows Up to Old Woman’s Birthday Except a Courier with a Cake That Reads, ‘We Know What You Did’
Dorothy carefully prepared a lovely dinner and a cake, anxiously awaiting her family, but as the hours passed, no one arrived. Her heart began to sink with each tick of the clock. But when the doorbell rang at last, she rushed to answer, hopeful. What she found shattered her heart into pieces. A young courier stood on the porch, holding a cake with a chilling message: “We Know What You Did.”
Her buried past had returned, haunting her in the most unexpected of ways.
Dorothy moved slowly across the kitchen, her slippers making a soft sound against the wooden floor, worn with time. She paused for a moment to adjust the heavy glasses that had slipped down her nose. Her fingers brushed against the edge of the calendar on the refrigerator, its corners curled from months of use, each date marking another day of solitude.
She counted the days until her finger stopped on the date circled in bright red ink: "My Birthday."
For a moment, a warmth filled her chest, like the soft sunlight streaming in through the window. Birthdays had always been a symbol of hope for her—even if it was quiet, even if she had to celebrate alone.
Turning back to the stove, she pushed aside her thoughts and continued preparing the meal. The kitchen filled with the comforting sounds of chopping vegetables, sizzling meat, and bubbling pots—sounds she had once associated with laughter, with a family.
The smell of freshly baked bread mingled with the aroma of roasted vegetables and savory chicken, wrapping the house in warmth and familiarity.
Each dish was carefully placed on the table, arranged like a beautiful setting for a perfect evening, a quiet, unspoken hope that something would still turn out right. She even took care to add a little extra frosting to the pie she had baked earlier, as she imagined her children, Miley and Ryan, tasting it and laughing together, just like when they were little.
Finally, she sank into her chair, exhausted from the day’s efforts. Her hand reached for an old photograph resting near her. The picture captured a moment of joy by the lakeside, with a younger Dorothy holding her children, Miley and Ryan, their faces bright with happiness.
But as she gazed at the photo, her smile slowly faded. She traced the torn edge of the picture, her finger touching the place where someone had once stood. The photo had been altered—someone’s face had been harshly ripped away, leaving an empty, haunting void. The emptiness was like a shadow that seemed to cling to her heart, a reminder of the painful truth she had tried to bury.
As evening settled into the quiet house, Dorothy's thoughts darkened. She stood by the window, glancing at the clock, the silence growing unbearable. Her heart fluttered nervously. She had waited for this evening for weeks, eager to reunite with Miley and Ryan, to hold them close and feel that family warmth again. But as the minutes turned into hours, there was no knock at the door, no car lights in the driveway, no comforting footsteps approaching.
Her anxiety grew. She reached for her phone, dialing Miley’s number first, then Ryan’s, but both went unanswered. “Where are they? What happened?” she whispered to herself, fear rising in her chest.
Then, the sharp sound of the doorbell startled her. It was a sound she had been longing for, and she rushed toward the door, convinced that at last, her children had arrived.
But when she opened it, her heart sank. It wasn’t Miley or Ryan. Instead, a courier stood in front of her, holding a neat white box.
“Mrs. Dorothy?” he asked, his voice polite but distant, as he handed her the box. “This was specially ordered for you.”
She took the box, confused and disappointed. “Who sent it?” she asked quietly.
“I’m sorry, ma’am, I don’t have that information,” the courier replied, stepping back into the dark evening.
Dorothy closed the door softly behind him and carried the box to the table. Her hands shook as she set it down, lifting the lid carefully. Inside, she found a cake with delicate white frosting. For a brief moment, she allowed herself to think that maybe her children had sent it as a surprise.
But as she read the words written across the top, her heart dropped. “We Know What You Did.”
A cold shiver ran down her spine. Her past, long buried, had resurfaced with a vengeance. The words seemed to echo in her mind as fear swept over her.
She rushed to her car, her hands trembling, her heart racing with dread. She drove quickly to Miley’s house, her thoughts swirling in a frantic haze.
When she arrived at Miley’s, she pounded on the door, calling out, “Miley! Miley, are you there? Please, answer me!”
There was no response. Just silence. Her pulse quickened. Desperation overtook her, and she pressed her face against the window, peering inside. Shadows moved in the distance, but no one appeared.
“Miley?” she whispered, barely making a sound, hoping somehow she would hear her.
Then, a voice broke the silence, soft but filled with concern. “Dorothy? Is that you?”
Startled, Dorothy turned and saw Sharon, Miley’s neighbor, standing at her door, wrapped in a sweater and watching her with a curious, worried expression.
“Sharon!” Dorothy said, her breath catching in relief and fear.
“I’m looking for Miley,” Dorothy continued, her voice trembling. “She isn’t answering her phone, and I’m so worried. Have you seen her?”
Sharon nodded slowly. “I did see Miley and Ryan this morning. They were loading up the car, looking pretty serious about something. They didn’t say much, but I overheard them mentioning something about going to the lake—the one from their childhood.”
At the mention of the lake, Dorothy’s heart froze. She stepped closer, panic rising. “The lake?”
Memories of their bright, carefree summers by the water came rushing back, but they were quickly overshadowed by something darker, something Dorothy had tried to forget.
Without another word, Dorothy rushed back to her car, calling out to Sharon as she left. “Thank you, Sharon!”
The drive to the lake was a blur. Dorothy's heart pounded in her chest, her hands gripping the steering wheel tightly as she tried to make sense of the fear building inside her.
When she arrived, the sun was setting, casting a soft golden light over the water. The old gazebo, worn by the years but still standing strong, loomed near the lake’s edge. Dorothy’s breath quickened as she approached it. Each step felt heavier than the last.
Inside the gazebo, she froze. There, sitting at a weathered table, was Robert, his once dark hair now streaked with gray, his face lined with age and regret. He looked up slowly, his eyes filled with a sadness that pierced her heart.
“Hello, Dorothy,” Robert said quietly, his voice soft yet filled with a deep sense of regret. “It’s been a long time.”
Dorothy’s anger flared up sharply, mixing with disbelief. “What are you doing here, Robert?”
Robert sighed deeply, looking down, his face heavy with guilt. “The children called me. They needed answers.”
Before Dorothy could react, a voice cut through the tension. “We deserve the truth, Mom.”
Turning quickly, Dorothy’s heart shattered as she saw Miley and Ryan standing at the entrance. Their faces were filled with anger, confusion, and hurt.
Ryan spoke first, his voice thick with bitterness. “You lied to us. You told us Dad disappeared, but that wasn’t true. You took us away. You kept us from having a father.”
Dorothy’s eyes welled with tears as she shook her head, desperate to explain. “No, it’s not what you think! I was trying to protect you!”
“Stop lying!” Miley yelled, tears streaming down her face. “We don’t want excuses anymore. We want the truth. Just leave!”
The pain was unbearable, but before she could speak, Robert stood up, his voice firm. “Stop! This is your mother’s birthday. She deserves better.”
Ryan’s anger flared again, his voice full of frustration. “Dad, don’t you see? She took us from you! We lost our father because of her!”
Robert’s voice dropped into sadness, and he slowly shook his head. “No, Ryan. It wasn’t your mother who lied. It was me.”
The words hit Miley and Ryan like a shockwave. “What do you mean, Dad?” Miley whispered, confusion and shock filling her eyes.
Robert’s face fell as he explained, his voice trembling. “I left. I was scared. We had debts piling up, and I couldn’t face them. I thought leaving would fix everything. But it didn’t. Dorothy begged me to stay, to work through it together. But I didn’t listen. I was weak.”
Dorothy stood in silence, heartbroken by his confession. Robert looked down, his guilt clear as he continued. “One morning, I left without saying goodbye. But Dorothy woke up, and when she saw me leaving, she didn’t try to stop me. She just… let me go. And she protected you from knowing the truth.”
The silence that followed felt like an eternity. Slowly, Miley’s tears fell. “Oh, Dad…” she whispered, understanding dawning in her eyes.
Dorothy stepped forward, her heart full of love and pain, and wrapped them in a tight embrace. “We can’t change the past, but we can make a new start. Together. We have now, and that’s what matters.”
Miley pulled back, wiping away her tears. “Mom, I’m sorry. I didn’t understand.”
Ryan nodded solemnly. “Can you forgive us?”
Dorothy smiled through her tears, her heart finally lifting. “Always. I’ve always loved you both.”
Robert stood quietly, watching them. Slowly, Dorothy turned toward him, her voice gentle. “If you’re ready, maybe we can find a way to rebuild this… slowly. Together.”
Robert nodded, his voice full of gratitude. “Thank you, Dorothy. Thank you for giving me a chance.”
As the evening fell, the old gazebo seemed to breathe more easily, the years of pain lifting just a little. For Dorothy, this birthday had been bittersweet but beautiful—a gift not wrapped in paper, but in forgiveness and healing. A family learning to love again, despite the wounds of the past.
