Kim Fleming Cernigliaro, a woman from Texas, recently shared her experience to raise awareness about a new method thieves are using to gain entry into homes.

One day, while Kim was home alone, she heard someone knock at her door. What initially sounded like a simple knock soon escalated into a loud pounding.

Recognizing that she wasn’t expecting anyone, she wisely decided not to open the door.

As the knocking grew louder, Kim became frightened and chose to wait before checking to see if anyone was still outside.

After some time, she thought the person had left, so she ventured downstairs and opened the front door.

To her surprise, she discovered a rubber band wrapped around the door handle. She immediately called the police to report the incident, unsure of what it meant.

When the police arrived, they informed her that other residents in the area had found similar rubber bands on their door handles.

They explained why thieves use this peculiar method.

When someone answers the door and releases the latch to open it, the rubber band stays in place.

This allows burglars to easily enter the house, as the rubber band prevents the latch from fully closing and locking the door.
