🐘 Raju’s Tears: The Elephant Who Waited 50 Years for Freedom
Raju was torn from his mother as a calf and spent five decades in captivity in Uttar Pradesh, India. He was forced to beg on the streets, beaten with bullhooks, and kept in spiked chains that left deep wounds across his body. Malnourished and scarred, he endured unimaginable suffering, surviving only on scraps and kindness from passersby.
In July 2014, a daring midnight rescue led by Wildlife SOS changed his life forever. As the chains were removed, Raju reportedly shed tears—an unforgettable moment that symbolized both his pain and his release. His story quickly spread worldwide, touching millions and sparking conversations about animal cruelty and the urgent need for conservation.
Today, Raju lives at the Wildlife SOS Elephant Conservation and Care Center, where he enjoys sugarcane, muskmelons, and playful enrichment activities like rolling tires. He has befriended other elephants, though he remains cautious around humans—a reminder of the trauma he endured.
