Silent Walking’ Is The Latest Trend Gen Z Are Obsessed With

Generation Z, consisting of individuals born between the mid-1990s and the early 2010s, often views itself as a powerful force in modern society. Their influence is frequently evident through various trends, such as the movement to retire skinny jeans or the widespread response to the ‘bed rotting’ trend. However, the latest craze sweeping through Zoomers goes beyond fashion and bedroom decor—it's called Silent Walking.
In a TikTok video shared by Mady Maio, co-host of the Okay Sis podcast, she introduces a movement she unintentionally sparked: “silent walking.” Maio presents it as a transformative practice, offering a break from today’s technology-driven world. Silent walking harks back to simpler times when people embraced walks without the distractions of smartphones, music, podcasts, or any digital interference. In her video, Maio advocates for walking without AirPods, podcasts, or music—just a solitary walk with oneself. Although initially anxious and overwhelmed during the first few minutes, she describes eventually reaching a "flow state" where she gained mental clarity. Maio believes silent walking created a space for reflection, allowing her to connect with her intuition and “hear the whispers of the universe.” While Maio may have popularized the practice, the term “silent walking” was reportedly coined earlier by New York City influencer Arielle Lorre earlier that year.
Lorre has been a strong proponent of silent walking, emphasizing the benefits of heightened senses and grounding experiences. While some social media users have praised the trend for its transformative effect on mental well-being, others mock it, calling it a rediscovery of a simple, tech-free activity—just walking. Some people share positive experiences, describing silent walking as a game-changer for their mental health and an effective tool for manifesting intentions. However, critics point out the irony of celebrating a basic, technology-free walk as a revolutionary practice, with comments like "Gen Z just discovered walking, y’all" highlighting the novelty given to what is essentially a routine activity known to earlier generations.
This trend also reflects society’s growing reliance on technology. The reaction to the idea of a 30-minute walk without devices being considered “game-changing” underscores how deeply technology has become woven into our everyday lives. This phenomenon ties in with research showing that excessive use of digital devices can have a negative impact on mental well-being.
Scientific studies suggest that an overdependence on digital technology may contribute to shallow thinking and hinder cognitive processes, which are crucial for transforming information into meaningful knowledge. While the silent walking trend may spark both amusement and skepticism, it also serves as a commentary on a deeper issue: the delicate balance between embracing technology and taking time for moments of simplicity and self-reflection in our increasingly connected world.
Whether regarded as a revolutionary discovery or a nostalgic return to a pre-tech era, the conversation surrounding silent walking highlights the evolving relationship between Generation Z and the pervasive influence of technology in their lives.
