Thailand: Covid-19 re-emerges with more than 53,000 infections, 16 deaths

Thailand’s Public Health Minister, Mr. Somsak Thepsutin, has urged the public not to panic amid growing concerns about a resurgence of COVID-19 in Thailand, emphasizing that the disease is now classified as endemic.

Although case numbers remain high, the virus tends to cause mild symptoms, Mr. Somsak Thepsutin stated.

From January 1 to May 10, Thailand reported 53,676 COVID-19 cases and 16 deaths, according to the Bangkok Post.

Bangkok recorded the highest number of infections with 16,723 cases, peaking during the week of April 27 to May 3, which saw 14,349 cases and 2 deaths.

Mr. Somsak Thepsutin urged people not to panic, but to remain vigilant and adhere to public health measures, such as wearing masks.

Other provinces with significant case numbers included Chon Buri (1,177 cases), Nonthaburi (866 cases), and Rayong (553 cases).

During the week of May 4–10, the number of new infections dropped to 12,543.

Mr. Somsak Thepsutin explained that seasonal factors and large gatherings contribute to the spread of COVID-19. He stated that COVID-19 is now a year-round endemic disease. While it remains highly contagious, the severity has decreased.

Once again, Mr. Somsak urged the public not to panic, but to stay cautious and follow public health guidelines, including mask-wearing.

The Minister also outlined the steps people should take if they suspect symptoms of COVID-19: perform a rapid antigen test at home if experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, or fatigue.

If the test result is positive, individuals should self-isolate, wear a mask, and avoid contact with others, especially elderly people, pregnant women, and those with underlying health conditions, while strictly observing hygiene protocols.

Mr. Somsak Thepsutin advised individuals with severe symptoms to seek medical care immediately, according to Bangkok Post.
