In the early hours of September 15, 2001, just days after the world reeled from the tragedy of 9/11, another disaster struck quietly along the Texas coast. A barge collided with the Queen Isabella Causeway—the only bridge connecting Port Isabel to South Padre Island—causing a massive section to collapse into the dark waters below.

Eleven people plunged into the bay. Among them was Sylvia Estrada de Minton, a 27-year-old mother who had been driving across the bridge. Her car was swept under the wreckage, and she found herself fighting for her life in the cold, shallow waters of Laguna Madre Bay.

Brennan S. Wells, a 23-year-old business operator, happened to be crossing the bridge when he saw the chaos unfold.
