Wife and Kids Were Starving While Husband Pampered Himself with Luxuries — Story of the Day

My Husband Kept Me on a Tight Budget While He Indulged in Luxury, Until He Learned a Lesson

When I first met David, I was 22, and he was the kindest man I had ever encountered. We hit it off immediately, and three months later, when he proposed, I accepted without hesitation. My grandmother had always warned, “Marry in haste, repent at leisure,” and she was absolutely right.

In the beginning, everything was perfect. We found our first small apartment, and with finances being tight, we had to be extra cautious. I meticulously clipped coupons, shopped sales, and stuck to a strict budget. I truly believed things would improve, but as time went on, I realized I was wrong.

Two years into our marriage, David received a promotion at work, and I was hopeful that we could finally breathe a little easier financially. But life had other plans. Shortly after, I discovered I was pregnant, and David immediately emphasized that we had to be even more cautious with the baby on the way.

When our sweet little Clara was born, I felt overjoyed. I envisioned dressing her up in cute little outfits, taking her to the zoo, and enjoying ice cream outings together as a family.

However, as Clara grew, I quickly learned that there was no room for extra spending. David had insisted that I quit my job when Clara was born, claiming that daycare would cost more than what I was earning.

When I asked for money for anything beyond my already stringent budget (even for something as simple as a treat for Clara), David always protested. I had to account for every penny, and he became obsessive about managing our finances.

One day, David came home, looking troubled. He explained that his boss had been promoted, and the new boss seemed to dislike him. David was worried about losing his job, so he was determined that we had to save even more money.

Without hesitation, he slashed my already minimal grocery budget, and I found myself struggling to make ends meet. Meanwhile, David ate lunch at his company cafeteria and frequently visited his mother's house for dinner.

Providing healthy food for Clara became a constant challenge, and when Clara started growing out of her clothes, David insisted we go to the thrift store for her new wardrobe.

David, on the other hand, was still dressing to impress. He sported expensive suits and wore a pricey watch because, to him, it was important to look the part of a successful executive, regardless of how unstable his job actually was. Then, when Clara started school, the situation only worsened.

Clara was growing so fast that she constantly needed new shoes. I vividly remembered my mother telling me that good shoes were vital for a child's healthy development, so I fought hard to make sure Clara had what she needed.

David would rant about how this was an unnecessary expense and claim I was spoiling Clara, but I stood firm. Knowing that Clara spent a significant portion of her day at school, I took a part-time job at a local café to earn some extra money.

It was clear that saving money was important, but David had become so obsessed with it that we were living miserably.

When I excitedly shared the news with David that I had started working, he seemed relieved. "Thank God, sweetie, because the company gave us the choice: accept a 20% salary cut or lay off some employees."

I was horrified. "But David, you told me they were making a lot of money! Sales were up, weren't they?"

"Executive decisions, darling," David said sadly. "The shareholders decided, and I can't afford to argue or they’ll fire me." I silently nodded, realizing that with me working part-time, we were still going to have even less money to live on.

Later that year, we had to attend a work event for David’s company. Since I couldn’t afford a new dress, I borrowed a nice one from a friend so I could look the part of a young executive’s wife.

At the party, I was introduced to David's new boss, who seemed overly friendly. He turned to me and said, "You should be very proud of your husband! He has a bright future ahead!"

David shook his head. "It's all an act, honey. He’s sly and manipulative. No one knows what he’s really up to. I’ve been warned I’m on his blacklist." I was surprised, as everyone seemed so friendly, but I chose to trust David.

Then, at Christmas, I was completely shocked when I came home to find a huge new top-of-the-line TV sitting in the living room. "David? Where did this come from?" I gasped.

"I bought it! It’s a QLED screen! Look at the picture quality and color!" David said excitedly, as if that justified the extravagant purchase.

I was stunned. "I can’t even afford to buy Clara a Christmas gift, and here you are spending thousands on a TV?"

David’s attitude shifted instantly. "It’s my money, and I’ll spend it however I want!"

I stared at him in disbelief. "I thought we were saving for our future. I thought we agreed that we’d be careful with money to secure a better life for us all..."

"My money?" David snapped. "I work for it, and I’m not going to waste it on keeping you living in luxury!"

I glanced around our small, dilapidated apartment at our old, second-hand furniture and my worn clothes. "Luxury?" I asked bitterly. "You live like a king while Clara and I live like beggars!"

"It's all mine! I deserve it! I work hard!" David shouted. "You’re nothing, a failure, just sucking the life out of me!"

At that moment, something inside me clicked. "You're right," I said calmly. "We won’t be a burden on you any longer." I packed a suitcase for Clara and one for myself. It didn’t take long, as we didn’t have much.

I walked out, Clara by my side, with our suitcases in tow, while David happily flipped channels on his expensive new TV. "Where are you going?" he asked, not even looking up.

"I'm leaving," I said firmly. "I’m divorcing you."

I went to my boss at the café and requested more hours, and a year later, I was promoted to manager.

Our lives improved drastically. Clara wore beautiful clothes to school, and we could finally afford healthy food. To my surprise, my career flourished, and I was eventually promoted again, this time to director of the restaurant chain. Life went from good to extraordinary.

One day, I received an unexpected knock on the door late on a Sunday. It was David, looking disheveled and in bad shape. He had gained weight, and his clothes were worn out.

"Please, babe," he begged, trying to force a weak smile. "I need your help."

I stood there, stunned. "Excuse me? What did you just say?"

David pleaded again, "I’m unemployed now. Could you lend me some money or let me stay with you and Clara while I get back on my feet? I know you’re doing really well."

I didn’t even hesitate. "Yes, I am," I said coldly, "and it’s thanks to me, not you. But guess what, David? It’s my money now, and I’m not about to waste it keeping you in luxury."

I slammed the door in his face. I never saw him again, though I heard he eventually found a job as a janitor at his old company.

What Can We Learn From This Story?

While it’s important to be cautious with money, some people, like David, take it too far and become obsessed with saving at the expense of everything else, living miserably in the process. A budget should be a family decision, allowing for reasonable spending as well as saving. David’s selfishness and obsession with accumulating wealth blinded him to the needs of his family, and in the end, it cost him everything.
