You're Doing It All Wrong: Here’s the Right Way to Run Your Dishwasher in Winter
Winter brings cozy nights and snowy views, but it also makes some household tasks a little trickier—especially running your dishwasher. Many people unintentionally make winter-specific mistakes that reduce cleaning efficiency and even shorten the machine’s lifespan. Knowing how to adjust your dishwashing routine for colder weather can make all the difference.
Here’s exactly how to keep your dishwasher working at its best all winter long.
1. Start with Hot Water
Before turning on your dishwasher, run the kitchen tap until the water is hot. Dishwashers clean best when water starts at 120°F (49°C) or above. Since it takes longer for water to heat up in winter, this quick step ensures stronger cleaning and better detergent activation.
2. Load the Racks the Right Way
Place pots and pans on the bottom rack without blocking the spray arms, and put cups, bowls, and smaller items on the top. Keep space between items so water can circulate properly, and avoid nesting utensils.
3. Don’t Overload
Stuffing the racks might save time, but it leads to cloudy glasses and leftover food bits. Follow your dishwasher’s recommended capacity and run a second load if needed—it's more efficient than rewashing dirty dishes later.
4. Use Rinse Aid for Better Drying
Winter air is much drier, causing water droplets to cling to dishes. Rinse aid helps water slide off smoothly and prevents foggy glassware. Keep the dispenser filled for the best results.
5. Choose a Stronger Wash Cycle
Winter meals tend to be heavier and greasier. Opt for cycles like Heavy Duty or Pots & Pans when cleaning stubborn winter food residue. Skip quick or eco cycles for these loads—they may not provide enough heat or pressure.
6. Open the Door After the Cycle
When the cycle ends, crack the dishwasher door open for 15–30 minutes. This allows steam to escape, speeds up drying, and reduces water spots—all without using the heated dry feature.
7. Keep the Filter Clean
More hearty meals mean more food particles. Check and clean the filter once a month to maintain water flow and prevent odors. Rinse it under hot water and scrub gently if needed.
8. Use Dishwasher-Specific Detergent
In colder months, some powders and liquids may not dissolve fully. Detergent pods or tablets are formulated to melt at optimal temperatures, giving you a more effective clean.
9. Monitor Your Water Temperature
Your hot water heater should be set to at least 120°F (49°C). If your dishwasher has a built-in heating element, make sure it's working properly so the machine can maintain consistent temperature throughout the cycle.
10. Prevent Frozen Pipes
Cold weather can freeze pipes and block water supply. Insulate kitchen plumbing, leave cabinet doors open on freezing nights, and let faucets drip slightly to keep water moving. Never run the dishwasher if you suspect frozen pipes.
11. Try These Viral Winter Dishwasher Hacks
A bowl of vinegar on the top rack can help break down grease and freshen the interior. A few drops of essential oil in the rinse-aid compartment can add a pleasant scent. Just check your user manual first to make sure these tricks are safe for your model.
