"That's not a toll. That's extortion."

The word landed hard. Bruce's grin dropped like a curtain.

"Careful," he said, quiet now, almost gentle, which was somehow worse than the shouting. "I can make today real easy for you, or I can make it the worst day you've had in a long while. Your choice, trucker."

"I'm not paying you anything." Nathan kept his hands on the wheel. "And I want your badge number."

Bruce laughed: short and mean. "You want my badge number?" He said it like Nathan had asked for the moon. "That's cute. That's real cute." He straightened up and slapped the side of the door twice, hard, the sound echoing off the metal. "Out of the truck!"

"Sir, I have the right to—"

"Out of the truck!"

Each word came louder than the last, and now other cars were slowing down on the highway, drivers craning their necks as they passed. Bruce didn't care; if anything, he seemed to like the audience.

"Full inspection, right now! You want to play games with me? We'll play!"

Nathan looked past him just for a second at Langston. The young officer had finally moved, one step closer, mouth half-open like he wanted to say something. He didn't say it.

Nathan opened the door slow and climbed down onto the shoulder, gravel under his boots, eighteen-wheelers roaring past close enough to shake his shirt. He kept his hands visible. He kept his face calm. Inside, his heart hammered against his ribs, but he'd be damned if he let this man see that.

Bruce stepped past him toward the back of the trailer, already pulling bolt cutters from his belt like he'd brought them for exactly this. He wasn't looking for a violation anymore; he'd stopped pretending there was one. He was looking for a reason. And if he couldn't find one, Nathan understood—standing there on the side of that highway with the sun beating down and his camera still blinking red—Bruce was going to make one up.

Bruce walked to the back of the trailer with the bolt cutters swinging loose in his hand, like a man who already knew how this would end. Nathan followed: close enough to watch, far enough to not give Bruce an excuse. The seal on the trailer doors caught the sunlight: a small plastic tag, numbered, official, federal.
