8 Instant Ways to Stop Motion Sickness Without Medicine – Travel Far and Still Feel Great

1. Use Citrus Peels (Orange, Tangerine, Lemon)

People who get motion sickness are usually sensitive to car odors such as air-conditioning smells or gasoline. The essential oils in citrus peels help mask unpleasant odors, relax the mind, and reduce nausea.

About one hour before traveling, peel a tangerine and keep the peel. Fold the peel and hold it close to your nose. Gently squeeze to release the essential oil.
You can repeat this while sitting on the vehicle. The same method works with orange and lemon peels.

2. Use Bread to Reduce Motion Sickness

Bread is a surprisingly effective way to ease nausea. Bring a fresh piece of bread before traveling. When symptoms appear, smell the bread.

Eating bread also helps. When you eat bread, your pancreas releases trypsin, which interacts with amino acids in the bread to help calm your nerves.

3. Drink Ginger Water

Ginger is well-known for its anti-nausea effects. Drink a small amount of ginger tea about 30 minutes before departure.

You can also suck on ginger candies, though fresh ginger water tends to work better.

4. Use Betel Leaves

Carry 1–2 betel leaves with you. Occasionally smell them to neutralize gasoline odors that cause discomfort.

About 15 minutes before getting into the vehicle, take 3–4 fresh betel leaves, crush them slightly, and place them on your navel. Cover with a cloth or gauze and secure with tape. Betel leaves warm the navel area and help reduce nausea.

5. Sit in the Front Seat

If you get motion sickness easily, sit in the front seats of a car where there is less shaking. Many people prefer sitting near the driver to minimize discomfort.

If traveling by boat, stay on the upper deck or toward the back, away from fuel smells. Look far ahead at the horizon rather than down at the water or bow.

6. Look Outside at a Fixed Point

While the vehicle is moving, look out the window toward the horizon. This helps your brain re-establish balance and align your sense of motion, reducing dizziness and nausea.

7. Apply Acupressure: Nei Guan Point

Acupressure is widely used in traditional medicine to relieve motion sickness.

How to find the Nei Guan point (P6):

Place three fingers (index, middle, ring) on the inside of your forearm starting from the wrist crease. The Nei Guan point is located right below your index finger.

Press and hold the point for 4–5 seconds and repeat until symptoms improve.

How to find the Hegu point:

This point lies between the thumb and index finger. Press firmly for 2 seconds, release, and repeat for 1–3 minutes.
These techniques help relieve nausea, dizziness, stomach discomfort, and headaches.

8. Avoid These 4 Types of Food Before Traveling

Foods high in sugar: Lychee, egg yolks, soy milk

Lychee has a high sugar content, which can ferment inside the body and create a slight alcohol-like effect, making you feel “drunk.”
The same can happen with egg yolks and soy milk.

Greasy or oily foods

Avoid eating too much before traveling. After eating, blood flows to your digestive system instead of your brain and limbs, decreasing alertness and increasing nausea.
Oily foods also slow digestion and cause bloating.

Strong-smelling foods

Foods with strong odors—like durian or alcohol—can worsen nausea inside enclosed vehicles.

Carbonated drinks and milk tea

Soft drinks cause bloating, stomach discomfort, and nausea due to gas buildup.
Milk tea contains high amounts of sugar, cream, and dairy, which lead to indigestion, bloating, and an increased urge to vomit.
