Olly Murs in shock split confession from Amelia: “I was in quite a bad place”

Olly Murs has previously spoken with striking honesty about the emotional struggles he faced before meeting his now-wife, Amelia Tank — including the surprising reason he initially “broke it off” with her, despite later marrying her and starting a family together.

The singer wed Amelia in July 2023 after four years of dating, and the couple have since welcomed two children. Their daughter, Madison, arrived in April last year, followed by their son, Albert, in September. But although their relationship appears picture-perfect today, Olly has said that the beginning of their romance was far more complicated than many fans realise.

Olly Murs: “I was in quite a bad place”

Speaking in a candid 2022 interview, Olly opened up about the difficult emotional period he endured before meeting Amelia in 2019. At the time, he was dealing with loneliness, uncertainty and a sense of disconnect from the fun-loving persona audiences knew on television and stage.

“All the cheekiness and the fun in the years I was single, it was just a façade,” he admitted. “I was in quite a bad place at times. I didn’t talk about it to anyone. I just felt really [bleep], down and lonely. I didn’t like being single.”

He added that his private life had essentially become “nonexistent,” and said he often questioned whether people who showed interest in him were doing so “for the right reasons,” or because he was famous. These fears, he said, made him extremely cautious about dating — and ultimately contributed to his initial hesitation with Amelia.

Why Olly Murs “broke it off” with Amelia

Olly recalled that their early dates were not exactly the romantic whirlwind people might imagine today.
“I thought, she’s a right sort. To be fair, our first dates were pretty crap — even she admits that,” he said. “I was very wishy-washy, very noncommittal. I was all over the place.”

His uncertainty eventually led him to end things before the relationship had even truly begun.
“I broke it off,” Olly revealed. “But we rekindled things in the summer. I had an epiphany. I was like: ‘What am I doing? She’s [bleep]ing perfect, she’s the one for me. Stop being an idiot!’”

That moment of clarity dramatically changed the course of their relationship. In February 2020, Olly asked Amelia to move into his Essex home. After spending lockdown together — an experience he later described as strengthening their bond — he proposed to her in June 2022.

Life as a father of two

Last month, Olly spoke about adjusting to life as a dad to two young children under two years old. He told Entertainment Daily! that the experience has been “full-on at times,” but incredibly rewarding.

“I feel truly blessed to have two children, let alone just have one,” he said. “I’m lucky that I’ve got a girl and a boy.”

When asked whether he and Amelia were considering expanding their family further, Olly laughed and said: “Who knows? We’re happy, I’m happy. Who knows? Amelia might change her mind. Right now we’re on the same page, but who knows!”

Olly Murs appears on Saturday Kitchen today (November 15) at 10am on BBC One.
