“What do we do with it?”

Damon said:

“Trash.”

Renee said nothing.

Ava looked.

“Can I have it?”

Everyone turned.

“Why?”

She shrugged.

“History.”

Damon disliked that answer.

Ava smiled.

“You don’t get to decide what I keep.”

He looked at Renee.

She laughed.

“He taught her boundaries.”

“Worst mistake of my life.”

Ava kept the chart.

Not on her wall.

In a box.

Years later it became useful for a college ethics assignment about systems.

She wrote:

A system can produce the behavior it measures and still damage the thing it claims to improve.

Her professor wrote:

Excellent. What inspired this?

Ava answered:

Family experience.

Nothing more.

She did not owe strangers pain simply because it produced a good paragraph.

When Noah graduated high school, Renee and Damon sat beside each other.

Not together.

Beside.

Seven years after the dinner.

Noah crossed the stage.

Renee cried.

Damon cried harder.

Ava whispered:

“You both need help.”

Denise, now seventy-five, said:

“They’ve had help.”

Everyone laughed.

Afterward Noah wanted dinner at the same house where everything had happened.

The original house still belonged to Damon.

The kitchen had been renovated.

New refrigerator.

New table.

Same room.

Renee hesitated at the doorway.

Noah noticed.

“You okay?”

She smiled.

“Yes.”

“You’re doing the face.”

“What face?”

“Guilty mom.”

Renee laughed sadly.

“I have one?”

“Very obvious.”

Noah put an arm around her.

“You can come in.”

Her eyes filled.

“I know.”

“No.”

He looked at her.

“I’m telling you.”

She nodded.

They ate.

No portions.

No points.

No moral language around dessert.

No one mentioned the past until Ava asked:

“Do we have ice cream?”

Damon opened the refrigerator.

Everyone went silent.

The coincidence was immediate.

Damon stood in front of the open doors.

Renee stared.

Ava stared.

Noah stared.

Then Denise began laughing.

“What?”

Damon looked around.

Denise pointed.

“The refrigerator.”

He understood.

So did everyone.

Ava laughed first.

Then Noah.

Renee covered her face.

Damon smiled.

“There is no ice cream.”

Ava groaned.

“After all that?”

“Terrible father.”

Renee stood.

“I’ll go buy some.”

Noah called:

“Get two!”

“No points required?”

Renee stopped.

The joke hung dangerously.
