A Babysitter’s Gift of Life.
When 22-year-old college student Kiersten Miles from New Jersey accepted a babysitting job to help cover her tuition fees, she believed she was simply taking on a typical part-time role. She never imagined that the job would lead to one of the most profound and selfless acts of her life.
Through a mutual friend, Kiersten was introduced to the Rosko family — George, Farra, and their three children. From day one, she quickly bonded with the kids, but it was the youngest, tiny Talia, who stole her heart.
Kiersten and Talia connected instantly. It wasn’t just the usual affection between a caregiver and a child — it was something deeper, something rare. Talia would reach for Kiersten’s hand, giggle when she entered the room, and rest peacefully in her arms. Within weeks, Kiersten felt like more than just a babysitter — she felt like part of the family.
But beneath Talia’s joyful spirit and bright smile lay a heartbreaking truth: she was suffering from biliary atresia, a rare and serious liver disease that would eventually become life-threatening.
Doctors told the Roskos that their daughter’s only hope for survival was a liver transplant. It was devastating — a nightmare no parent ever expects to face. They began navigating the difficult, uncertain journey of finding a living donor. Time was critical, and the search was daunting.
It was then that Kiersten made a decision that would change all their lives.
Without hesitation, she told the Roskos:
“If I’m a match, I want to do it. I want to donate part of my liver.”
The family was overwhelmed. They hadn’t asked her — they never would have. Donating an organ is no small gesture. It requires invasive surgery, extensive testing, and weeks of recovery. There are risks, complications, and scars — both physical and emotional. But Kiersten was unwavering in her decision.
She underwent a series of rigorous evaluations and medical tests. Weeks passed. And then, the incredible news arrived: she was a perfect match.
On January 11, 2017, Kiersten and little Talia were wheeled into surgery at the same hospital. Over the course of 14 grueling hours, doctors carefully removed a portion of Kiersten’s liver and transplanted it into Talia’s fragile body. It was an emotional day filled with anxiety, hope, and quiet prayers.
Both patients came through the surgery successfully.
Kiersten awoke sore, exhausted, and surrounded by loved ones. Though weak, she was filled with a deep sense of relief. Talia, still small and fragile, began showing signs of recovery within days. Her new liver — the one Kiersten had given her — began working, and her body responded beautifully.
As weeks turned into months, Talia transformed. Her energy returned. Her appetite grew. Her laughter filled the Rosko home again. And with each milestone, it was clear: Kiersten hadn’t just given a part of her body — she had given Talia her future.
Today, Talia is a thriving, joyful little girl. She runs, plays, and enjoys the carefree life every toddler deserves. And at the heart of her story is a young woman who made a decision that many adults would struggle to comprehend.
Kiersten, now fully recovered, reflects on her choice with no regrets.
“I didn’t do it to be called a hero,” she says. “I just knew it was the right thing to do.”
But to the Rosko family — and to anyone who hears this story — she is nothing short of remarkable.
In a world that can often feel divided and heavy with bad news, Kiersten’s act of kindness is a powerful reminder of what compassion looks like in action. Her story shows us that true family isn’t always about blood — sometimes, it’s about choice, love, and showing up when it matters most.
Some people truly have hearts of gold.
And sometimes, a simple babysitting job turns into the greatest gift of all — the gift of life.
