He threw himself toward his son.

The gun fired.

Jonathan collapsed.

Caleb caught him.

Chaos erupted.

Takoda's warriors raised their weapons.

Several of Gideon's men did the same.

Then one of them looked at the old man bleeding in Caleb's arms.

He lowered his gun.

Another followed.

Gideon shouted,

"Fire!"

Nobody did.

He turned.

"That's an order!"

One man stared at him.

"You told us Morgan was dead."

Gideon looked around.

His control was disappearing.

Jonathan gripped Caleb's shirt.

"Don't chase him."

Caleb looked down.

Blood spread across his father's shoulder.

"He shot you."

"I've been shot before."

Even then, Jonathan almost smiled.

"Gets less impressive each time."

Caleb laughed despite himself.

Gideon climbed onto his horse.

Before he could escape, Chief Takoda stepped into his path.

The chief did not raise a weapon.

He simply stood there.

Gideon looked around.

Nayeli beside Caleb.

Jonathan alive.

His own hired men refusing to fire.

Documents beneath the ruins.

Everything he had buried was standing around him.

For the first time in decades, Gideon Rusk had nowhere to place the blame.

By autumn, Black Ridge Mercantile was finished.

Jonathan's records exposed forged claims, staged raids, stolen livestock, bribed officials, and property transfers stretching across two decades.

Several men fled the territory.

Others testified against Gideon.

Gideon himself was taken east to face federal charges.

But Caleb cared surprisingly little about what happened to him afterward.

He had something more difficult to understand.

A father.

Jonathan recovered slowly at Takoda's village.

Their first conversations were not easy.

Caleb did not run into his father's arms and forgive eighteen years.

He asked questions.

Hard ones.

"Why didn't you come for me?"

"Why did Mother lie?"

"Why did you let Gideon raise me in ways you should have?"

Sometimes Jonathan had answers.

Sometimes he did not.

Sometimes the answer was simply fear.

Caleb learned that people could sacrifice everything for someone and still hurt them terribly.

Love did not automatically make every choice right.

But anger did not erase love either.

They rebuilt slowly.

One conversation at a time.

Nayeli watched from a distance.

One evening Caleb found her near the cottonwoods.

"You haven't asked."

"Asked what?"

"Whether I'm staying."
