There was another kind.
Learning that the memory you built around them had been manipulated.
At noon, Elena brought Noah downstairs.
The boy saw the broken floor and stopped.
“Daddy broke it.”
Ethan almost smiled.
“Yes.”
“Grandma mad?”
The question startled him.
“Why would Grandma be mad?”
Noah shrugged.
Ethan crouched.
“Did Grandma tell you not to touch the floor?”
Noah nodded.
His heartbeat quickened.
“When?”
“Lots.”
“What did she say?”
Noah concentrated.
“Dirty.”
“What was dirty?”
“Mommy floor.”
Ethan went still.
“Did Grandma call it that?”
Noah shook his head.
“Me.”
Ethan touched the boy’s hair.
“Why Mommy floor?”
Noah pointed to the star necklace on the table.
“Mommy wore.”
“How do you remember?”
Noah shrugged.
Maybe he did.
Maybe from photographs.
Maybe Elena had shown him.
Maybe children kept pieces adults assumed they had lost.
Ethan took Rachel’s star.
“Do you want this?”
Noah touched it carefully.
“Mommy’s.”
“Yes.”
“We fix?”
Ethan looked at the broken chain.
“Yes.”
“We fix.”
That afternoon, Ethan called an attorney.
Not the Cole family attorney.
Not anyone connected to his company.
He called Patricia Gomez, a federal litigation attorney Rachel had once recommended to a friend.
He told her only enough to make her cancel the rest of her Sunday.
By five o’clock she was sitting in Ethan’s study surrounded by documents from the hidden box.
She read Rachel’s letter twice.
Listened to half the recording.
Then stopped it.
“Do you have a safe?”
“Yes.”
“Put originals there.”
“Why?”
“Because you’re about to make several people very nervous.”
Ethan stared.
“You believe her?”
“I believe evidence.”
She pointed toward the bank statements.
“These transfers are real.”
“You checked?”
“I checked what I can without subpoenas.”
“What now?”
“First, we make copies.”
“Then?”
“We go around local law enforcement.”
Ethan understood.
“Federal?”
“Possibly.”
“Why?”
“Potential wire fraud. Trust theft. Forged signatures. Interstate transfers.”
“My mother.”
Patricia watched him.
“Yes.”
The word still hurt.
“What about Rachel’s death?”
“I don’t know.”
“Marcus thinks the investigation was interfered with.”
