“You think I’m embarrassed?”

“I think you wanted everyone afraid of you.”

Tyler stared.

Gabriel continued.

“Now they're watching you lose control.”

“Shut up.”

“Put the chair down.”

Tyler’s eyes filled with something between rage and panic.

For one second Gabriel thought he might throw it.

Then Jasmine spoke.

“You already scared a little girl.”

Tyler looked toward the corner booth.

The child was crying into her mother’s shoulder.

Jasmine continued, “Is that what you came here to do?”

The chair lowered several inches.

Nobody moved.

Tyler looked around.

At the broken glass.

The overturned table.

His friends standing near the door.

Customers filming.

Gabriel.

Jasmine.

Then he dropped the chair.

It hit the floor.

Gabriel did not rush him.

“Good.”

Tyler looked at him.

“Don't talk to me.”

“Fine.”

Sirens became audible outside.

Tyler moved toward the entrance.

Neil pointed.

“Stay here.”

Tyler laughed bitterly.

“You wanted me out.”

“Before you destroyed half my dining room.”

“I’m leaving.”

Gabriel stepped sideways.

Not blocking him entirely.

Just enough.

“The police are twenty seconds away.”

Tyler looked at him.

“You're not a cop.”

“No.”

“Then you can't keep me here.”

Gabriel nodded.

“True.”

That answer threw Tyler off.

Gabriel continued.

“If you walk out, I’m not chasing you.”

Tyler’s eyes narrowed.

“But they have your face, your name, your friends, three cameras, and twenty witnesses.”

Gabriel gestured toward the broken dining room.

“You decide whether running improves your evening.”

Tyler stopped.

For the first time all night, he made a sensible decision.

He stayed.

Two patrol officers entered moments later.

Officer Elena Ramirez came first, followed by Officer David Morgan.

They did not rush toward Gabriel because he was Black and standing closest to Tyler.

They stopped.

Looked.

Asked.

“What happened?”

Neil immediately pointed toward Tyler.

“That man assaulted my waitress, broke dishes, flipped a table, threw a glass, and swung at that customer.”

Ramirez looked toward Tyler.

“Sir, keep your hands visible.”

Tyler obeyed.

Morgan separated him from everyone else.

Ramirez asked Jasmine if she was injured.

“My wrist is sore.”

“Did he grab it?”

“Earlier. And my waist.”

“Do you want medical attention?”

“No.”

“Okay. We can change that if you do.”

Then Ramirez looked toward Gabriel.

“You involved?”

“Only after he shoved me twice and threw a punch.”

“Did you strike him?”

“No.”

“Restrain him?”

“Briefly when he was swinging. Released him when he stopped.”

Ramirez nodded.

“Anybody have video?”

Nearly half the room raised a phone.

Tyler’s face fell.

Within minutes, the story became harder for him to control.

One recording captured him putting his hand on Jasmine’s lower back.

Another showed her stepping away and clearly saying, “Don't touch me.”

A third showed Tyler grabbing her wrist when she attempted to take his empty plate.

Then the plate.

The glass.

The table.

The shoves.

The punch.

The chair.

No mystery.

No need for anyone to decide whose personality seemed more believable.

The cameras had preserved chronology.

Tyler began changing his story anyway.

He told Morgan that Jasmine had been “flirting all night.”

One of his own friends immediately said, “No, she wasn't.”

Tyler glared.

His friend looked miserable but continued.

“She kept telling him to stop.”

Tyler said Gabriel attacked him.

Three videos showed Tyler shoving Gabriel first.

Then swinging.

He claimed the restaurant had over-served him.

Neil produced the receipt.
