Miles Teller has left fans stunned after debuting a completely new look for his role in the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic, Michael.

The Top Gun: Maverick star, 38, was barely recognizable in a first-look image that went viral online Thursday, showing him with longer hair, subtle facial prosthetics, and a 1980s-style appearance that caught fans off guard. Teller portrays John Branca, the King of Pop’s long-time attorney and estate co-executor, in the forthcoming Lionsgate production (Page Six).

“He looks so different!” one user commented on X (formerly Twitter), while another joked, “Miles Teller’s wig might be the most controversial part of this film.” Several even compared his look to Journey frontman Steve Perry, noting the uncanny resemblance.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Teller’s transformation was achieved through detailed prosthetic design and hairstyling to reflect Branca’s signature look during Michael Jackson’s peak career years in the 1980s and early 1990s.

A Star-Studded Cast for a Pop Legend’s Story

While Teller’s appearance caused a stir online, the real spotlight remains on Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson’s 29-year-old nephew, who stars as his legendary uncle. Jaafar — the son of Jermaine Jackson and Alejandra Genevieve Oaziaza — announced the casting on Instagram in 2023, writing:

“I’m humbled and honored to bring my Uncle Michael’s story to life. To all the fans around the world, I’ll see you soon.”

The film also features an impressive supporting cast, including Colman Domingo (Rustin) as patriarch Joe Jackson, Nia Long as matriarch Katherine Jackson, Jessica Sula as LaToya Jackson, Larenz Tate as Motown founder Berry Gordy, Laura Harrier as music executive Suzanne de Passe, and Kat Graham as Diana Ross (Deadline).

The Film’s Vision and Story

Directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, Emancipation), Michael promises to present “a compelling and honest portrait” of the global icon. The biopic will explore Jackson’s rise from child prodigy in the Jackson 5 to his groundbreaking solo career, as well as his private struggles and triumphs.

According to Lionsgate’s official synopsis, the film “traces Michael Jackson’s journey from the discovery of his extraordinary talent to his evolution into one of the most influential and innovative entertainers in history.” It will highlight both “the highs of his musical genius” and “the complex realities of his personal life” (Variety).

Authorized and Backed by the Jackson Estate

Unlike previous unauthorized documentaries, Michael is being made with the full cooperation of the Jackson estate, which granted access to the late singer’s catalog and likeness rights (BBC Entertainment News). This means the film will feature Jackson’s original music — a major draw for fans eager to see his performances recreated on the big screen.

Michael Jackson passed away at age 50 in 2009 after suffering cardiac arrest caused by acute propofol intoxication. His death marked the end of an era, but his legacy continues to influence artists worldwide.

Release and Anticipation

After months of production delays, Lionsgate finally released the first teaser trailer on Thursday, giving fans a glimpse of Jaafar’s uncanny portrayal of his uncle on stage, complete with Jackson’s signature dance moves and fashion.

The biopic, originally scheduled for release in October 2025, is now slated to hit theaters on April 24, 2026 (Variety).

Film critics and music fans alike are calling Michael one of the most highly anticipated biographical films of the decade — a project that aims to do justice to one of pop culture’s most enigmatic figures.
