Daniel felt anger rise.

Then stop.

Because it was true.

The truth did not make Natalie less responsible.

It also did not make him innocent.

Natalie finished.

“I am sorry to Lily.”

She looked down.

“She owes me nothing.”

That was the last time Daniel saw her for many years.

Outside the courthouse Jonathan asked whether he was okay.

“No.”

“Good.”

Daniel stared.

“What?”

Jonathan shrugged.

“If you walked out of that feeling good, I’d worry.”

Daniel almost laughed.

Then he did.

Only once.

Lily was ten when she asked to watch the birthday video again.

Daniel said no.

Too fast.

She crossed her arms.

“It’s about me.”

“I know.”

“Then why can everybody else watch it?”

“They can’t.”

“Police did.”

“That’s different.”

“Lawyers.”

“Different.”

“Grandpa.”

Daniel stopped.

Richard had watched the video several times during legal proceedings.

Lily knew.

She looked at him.

“I want to see what happened.”

“You remember.”

“Some.”

“Why would you want more?”

She shrugged.

“I want to know if it looks as scary as it feels.”

Daniel did not know what to do with that.

They discussed it with Lily’s therapist.

The therapist did not say yes or no.

Instead she asked Lily what she hoped to learn.

The answer surprised everyone.

“Dad believed Natalie.”

Daniel looked down.

Lily continued.

“I remember his face.”

Her therapist waited.

“I want to see when he changed.”

Daniel’s throat tightened.

The video was shown in a therapy office.

Not at home.

Not alone.

Lily watched the horse fall.

She watched Natalie blame her.

She watched Daniel enter later and scold her.

Then Richard appeared.

The recording continued beyond George stopping playback that day because another guest’s phone camera had captured what happened afterward.

Richard confronting Natalie.

Daniel apologizing.

Lily watched herself hesitate before hugging him.

She paused the video.

“There.”

Daniel looked.

“What?”

“You changed.”

His recorded face showed horror.

Shame.

Fear.

Love.

All at once.

Lily stared.

“I thought you were still mad.”

“No.”

“I didn’t know.”

Daniel reached toward her.

Stopped.

She noticed.

“Dad.”

“Yes?”

“You can hug me.”

He did.

Afterward, Lily never asked to see the recording again.

At twelve, she asked something harder.

“Why did you marry her?”

Daniel sighed.

They sat on Richard’s porch during summer.

Richard was napping inside.

“Because I loved her.”

“But how?”

Daniel smiled.

“That is an annoyingly complicated question.”

“She was bad.”

“She did bad things.”

“Same.”

“No.”

Lily frowned.
