The Duke Mocked Her in French — She Replied in French, Italian, and Latin, Leaving Him Speechless
“But you didn’t get all the money.”
He straightened.
“Who is this?”
A short laugh.
“There’s almost five million dollars your warrants never touched.”
Nathaniel’s expression changed.
“Where?”
The caller ignored him.
“Gannon had someone smarter than him.”
The line went dead.
Nathaniel sat motionless.
Then he opened the secure financial report on his tablet.
The federal accountants had identified three offshore accounts.
Each had been emptied between Gannon’s arrest and the government’s freeze order.
At the time, investigators assumed somebody inside Bellamy’s operation moved the money.
The transfer destination had never been fully resolved.
Nathaniel opened Gannon’s personal profile.
Spouse.
Lauren Voss-Gannon.
Age forty-one.
Senior compliance manager at Great Lakes Meridian Bank.
Fourteen years in international transfers.
Certification in Bank Secrecy Act compliance.
Anti-money-laundering specialization.
Nathaniel stopped reading.
He stared at the screen.
“Of course.”
Lauren had appeared almost entirely as a victim during the scandal.
She left Gannon shortly after the dashcam footage became public.
Her employer dismissed her because of reputational concerns.
She stayed with her sister.
Media photographs showed a stunned wife carrying a weekend bag from the home.
Everyone interpreted the image the same way.
Nathaniel suddenly saw something else.
He reopened the transfer logs.
The money moved through three accounts.
Then consolidated.
Then entered a Delaware holding company.
The transaction used banking architecture that required knowledge well beyond Gannon’s abilities.
Nathaniel called Dana.
“Where is Lauren Voss-Gannon?”
Dana said, “I thought she was with family.”
“Find her.”
A pause.
“Why?”
Nathaniel stood.
“Because we investigated the cop and forgot to investigate the banker.”
Within twenty minutes, agents learned Lauren had booked a private charter from a small executive airfield outside Detroit.
Destination: Nassau.
Departure in less than an hour.
Nathaniel drove.
The Gulfstream sat beneath hangar lights when he arrived.
Its engines had already started their preflight cycle.
Nathaniel’s sedan crossed the apron after airport security opened the federal access gate.
He stopped directly in front of the aircraft.
The engines wound down.
Lauren appeared at the top of the stairs.
She wore a cream blazer, dark trousers, and the composed expression of a woman who had already rehearsed every possible conversation.
“Agent Brooks.”
Nathaniel raised his badge.
“Come down.”
She smiled faintly.
“This seems excessive.”
“Not from where I’m standing.”
Lauren descended slowly.
“I’m leaving for a vacation.”
Nathaniel nodded.
“After your husband received twenty-eight years.”
“Yes.”
“That sounds understandable.”
She relaxed slightly.
Nathaniel continued.
“Except you transferred four-point-eight million dollars six hours after his arrest.”
Her expression changed by almost nothing.
Almost.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Nathaniel looked toward the leather bag on her shoulder.
“Great Lakes Meridian Bank.”
No response.
“International transfer division.”
Nothing.
“Seventeen years.”
Lauren looked at him.
“You have excellent credentials.”
Nathaniel paused.
“You built the laundering structure.”
She shook her head.
“My husband handled his own finances.”
Nathaniel smiled faintly.
“No.”
He stepped closer.
“Your husband could barely structure cash deposits without creating a pattern a first-year accountant could identify.”
Lauren’s eyes hardened.
“You built the offshore layer.”
She said nothing.
“You kept every payment under reporting thresholds.”
Another pause.
“You moved the money after his arrest.”
Lauren folded her arms.
“You can’t prove that.”
Nathaniel held up his phone.
“We have the IP address.”
Her face went still.
“Tablet registered to your Apple account.”
Nothing.
“Bank credentials assigned to you.”
Nathaniel waited.
“Two-factor approval through your employee token.”
Lauren looked toward the jet.
“There was no second person.”
He gave her several seconds.
Then he added, “We also know you called the charter company before the sentencing finished.”
Lauren’s composure finally cracked.
“What do you expect me to do?”
Nathaniel said nothing.
“Spend the rest of my life paying for a stupid man?”
She stepped closer.
“He came home every Tuesday bragging about running Fairmont.”
Her voice became sharper.
“He thought the money was his.”
Nathaniel watched.
“He had no idea how to move it.”
Lauren continued without realizing how much she was giving him.
“I created every account.”
Nathaniel did not interrupt.
“I structured every transfer.”
Another breath.
“I kept him from triggering bank reporting.”
She pointed toward the airfield.
“And after everything exploded, I moved what was left because I earned it.”
Nathaniel waited.
Lauren stopped.
The realization reached her.
She closed her eyes.
“You let me talk.”
Nathaniel nodded.
“Yes.”
“Was this recorded?”
“Yes.”
Lauren almost laughed.
“Of course it was.”
Police vehicles approached from the terminal.
Lauren looked toward them.
Then toward the aircraft.
Then back at Nathaniel.
“You already knew.”
“I knew enough.”
She held out both wrists.
Nathaniel cuffed her carefully.
Not tight.
Not roughly.
The way people were supposed to be cuffed.
“You have the right to remain silent.”
Lauren listened.
She did not interrupt.
The Gulfstream remained beneath the lights.
Its door closed.
The flight plan was canceled.
The money was recovered over the following month.
Lauren Voss-Gannon eventually pleaded guilty to money laundering, wire fraud, conspiracy, and attempted flight to avoid prosecution.
Her sentence was fourteen years.
She was assigned to a federal women’s facility several states away.
Gannon learned about it through a Department of Justice notification.
By then, he had spent eight months in federal custody.
He was thirty-nine.
His projected earliest release date placed him well into his sixties.
He read Lauren’s name several times.
Then he folded the paper.
Prison had reduced his old world into arithmetic.
Years.
