Did it anyway. That's how you know you're growing. Emily took a breath and walked into the ballroom. The space was set up like a corporate presentation.
Stage at the front, chairs arranged in rows, a massive screen behind the podium. Employees filed in slowly, confused and nervous. Management clustered together near the back. Victor at the center looking furious and trying to hide it.
Ryan stood off to the side with James and the legal team, his expression unreadable. When he saw Emily, something flickered in his eyes. Concern maybe or solidarity. Emily took her seat in the front row, feeling every eye on her.
She heard whispers, people wondering who she was, why she was sitting up front like she mattered. At exactly 2 p.m., Ryan walked onto the stage. The room went silent. He stood at the podium, looked out at the assembled staff, and Emily could see the moment he shifted into CEO mode. shoulders back, expression serious, voice commanding.
"Thank you all for coming," he said, and his voice carried across the ballroom without needing a microphone. "I know this is unusual. I know you're worried. Some of you probably think you're about to be fired."
Nervous laughter rippled through the crowd. "You're not. Most of you aren't, anyway." Ryan's expression hardened.
But some people in this room are about to have a very bad day. Because two weeks ago, I learned that the Grand Meridian, my flagship property, the hotel I'm most proud of, has become a place where employees are abused, threatened, and dehumanized on a daily basis. The room erupted in whispers. Victor's face went white, then red.
I conducted an investigation, Ryan continued. A thorough one. What I found was systematic mistreatment of staff at every level. verbal abuse, physical intimidation, retaliation against anyone who dared to speak up, a culture of fear so pervasive that people stopped seeing it as abnormal. Emily watched the crowd's reactions.
Some people looked shocked, others looked vindicated, like they'd been waiting years for someone to finally acknowledge the truth. "I want to show you something," Ryan said, and the screen behind him lit up. Footage began to play. Victor grabbing the young server's arm in the hallway, his face twisted in anger.
Audio of managers screaming at staff in back corridors, screenshots of threatening emails, testimony from employees, faces blurred to protect their identities, talking about the abuse they'd endured. The ballroom was dead silent except for the damning evidence playing out on screen. When it ended, Ryan stepped forward again. This is not acceptable.
This is not how my company operates, and it ends today. He pulled out a piece of paper. Effective immediately, the following individuals are terminated for cause. Victor Hail, general manager.
Robert Chen, assistant general manager. Michelle Torres, head of housekeeping. Daniel Wright, restaurant manager. With each name, someone in the crowd gasped or flinched.
Emily saw Victor surged to his feet, his face purple with rage. This is a setup, Victor shouted. You can't. I can, and I am.
Security will escort you out. You have 1 hour to collect your personal belongings under supervision. Your employment contracts have been terminated for violations of company policy and basic human decency. You're done.
Security guards appeared from the sides of the ballroom, moving toward the named managers. The room descended into chaos. Some people crying, others cheering, most just sitting in shocked silence. Victor pushed past a security guard strode toward the stage.
You're making a mistake, Sterling. I built this hotel. I made it profitable. I made you money.
You made me complicit, Ryan said, his voice cutting through Victor's bluster like a knife. You ran this hotel by terrorizing people who couldn't fight back. You turned hospitality into hostility, and you're not going to do it anymore. Based on what?
Anonymous complaints from employees too weak to handle real work? Based on evidence collected by someone who experienced your management firsthand, Ryan gestured to Emily. someone you fired for showing basic human kindness. Every eye in the room turned to Emily. She stood up, legs shaking, and walked onto the stage.
The walk felt like a mile. Victor stared at her, confused at first. Then recognition dawned, and his expression went from confusion to disbelief to fury. "Emily," he spit her name like a curse.
"You were Madison Cole." "I was," Emily said, and her voice came out stronger than she felt. You fired me for helping someone you thought was beneath you. Turns out that someone owned this hotel, and I spent the last week documenting every way you've made this place toxic.
Victor's face contorted. You lying little watch yourself, Ryan said, his voice dangerous. You're already fired. Don't add assault to the list.
Security took Victor's arms, and he struggled briefly before going rigid with impotent rage. This isn't over. I'll sue. I'll destroy you both.
Try it, Ryan said. My legal team would enjoy the practice. They dragged Victor toward the exit, and Emily watched him go, feeling a complicated mix of vindication and pity. He'd built his identity on power and control, and now it was stripped away in front of everyone.
She should have felt triumphant. Instead, she just felt sad for how small he looked. The other terminated managers followed, some defiant, others in tears. The ballroom was electric with shock and whispered conversations.
Ryan held up his hand for silence. I know this is a lot to process. I know some of you are scared about what comes next. Let me be clear.
The rest of you are not in danger. But things are going to change. He outlined the new structure, employee assistance programs, anonymous reporting systems, mental health support, new management hired from outside, trained in leadership that didn't rely on fear. and I'm appointing someone to oversee this transformation," Ryan continued. "Someone who understands what it's like to work here, who fought for what was right, even when it cost her everything.
Emily Carter will be the new director of employee relations and culture for Sterling Hospitality Group." Emily's head snapped toward Ryan. They hadn't discussed a title, hadn't discussed making this permanent. This was supposed to be temporary, just until they fixed the Grand Meridian.
Ryan met her eyes and smiled slightly like he knew exactly what he' just done. The crowd erupted in mixed reactions. Some applauded, including Jennifer, who was crying and clapping at the same time. Others looked suspicious or resentful.
A few walked out. When the room settled, an employee near the back stood up. The purple-haired barista from Emily's undercover weekend. "I have a question," she said, her voice shaking but determined.
