"No," he said. "It wasn't that."
They drove another block. An elementary school passed on the right behind a chain-link fence painted with a mural. Children moved in a loose line toward a door. Toby watched until the school disappeared behind them.
"Were you scared?" he asked. "Back there, before everything happened."
This was the question Wyatt had expected eventually. It sounded like it was about Blake, but it was really about everything Toby had seen and stored over years of careful ordinary life. Wyatt had prepared, in the abstract, for the version of this conversation that involved explaining. He had not prepared for the version that involved being seen.
"Yes," he said.
Toby turned, genuinely surprised. "Scared of him?"
"No."
Wyatt kept his eyes on the road.
"Scared of you getting hurt."
The silence that followed had a different texture from the ones before it. Toby sat with the answer without looking away and without rushing to fill the space.
"I've done dangerous work for a long time," Wyatt continued. "And I decided early that you wouldn't have to see that part of me. You'd have a father who took you to breakfast on Saturdays, helped with homework, and drove a truck with a rattling undercarriage."
He stopped and reconsidered his words.
"I thought keeping those things separate was how you kept someone safe."
Toby was quiet.
"Your mother asked me once to promise her something," Wyatt said. "She asked me to make sure that whatever I was out in the world, at home I was just your dad. Nothing else."
He glanced at Toby and then back to the road.
"I've tried to keep that."
"You did," Toby said.
The words came without qualification. Wyatt felt them before he fully understood them. He kept his eyes forward.
"That man today," Toby said after a moment. "He thought you were nothing."
"Yes."
"And you knew he thought that."
"Yes."
Toby nodded slowly, working through something. "So why didn't you just leave before it got bad? We could have walked away earlier."
That was the heart of it. Not the fight and not the skill. The question beneath all of it made Wyatt's chest tighten in a way physical danger never did.
"Because he had his hand on you," Wyatt said. "And I couldn't make myself walk away from that."
Toby looked at him for a long moment. Then he faced forward again.
"I'm glad you didn't," he said.
They pulled into the lot behind their building. Wyatt cut the engine, and they sat for a moment in the quiet of the parking structure while the engine ticked down. Toby still had the skateboard across his knees.
"I know you can't tell me everything," he said. "I'm not asking for that."
"Okay."
"But can you tell me if you're okay?"
Wyatt looked at his son. The question was so direct and uncomplicated that it took him a second to recognize what it really was, a ten-year-old asking if his father was injured, but also one person asking another something real.
