“You were.”

Vanessa looked surprised.

He continued.

“You were allowed to be jealous.”

Her face tightened.

“You were allowed to hate the robe.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“You were allowed to ask me to change how we honored Aisha.”

Marcus leaned forward.

“You were not allowed to punish a child because he remembered his mother.”

Vanessa looked down.

“You were not allowed to tell him I wanted to send him away.”

Silence.

“You were not allowed to lock his door.”

“I thought I was helping him stay in bed.”

“He was scared.”

“He used fear to get your attention.”

“He was seven.”

Marcus’s voice broke.

“Seven.”

Vanessa wiped her face.

“And you were not allowed to cut his hair because it made you uncomfortable.”

Her expression changed.

“It wasn’t because he looked Black.”

Marcus went still.

“I didn’t say that.”

Vanessa stared.

“You think it.”

“I think you need to explain why you wrote ‘cleaner family presentation’ in three emails.”

“That meant formal.”

“His curls were clean.”

“I know.”

“Say it.”

Vanessa’s mouth trembled.

“Say what?”

“Why did his hair bother you?”

“I told you.”

“No.”

Marcus shook his head.

“You told me photographs.”

She looked at the table.

Marcus waited.

Eventually Vanessa whispered:

“Because everyone said he looked like her.”

Marcus’s anger changed.

Not gone.

More complicated.

Vanessa continued.

“Every time someone saw him, they talked about Aisha.”

Tears moved down her face.

“Her eyes. Her curls. Her smile.”

Marcus listened.

“I know how ugly that sounds.”

“Yes.”

“I hated myself for feeling it.”

“Good.”

Her attorney looked toward Marcus.

Patrice did not stop him.

Vanessa whispered:

“I wanted something about the family to look like mine.”

Marcus stared.

“And you chose his body.”

Vanessa covered her face.

That ended mediation for the day.

The final divorce agreement took seven months.

Vanessa received no custody rights because she was a stepparent and had never adopted Caleb.

She requested continued contact.

Caleb’s therapist recommended against it initially.

Marcus followed that recommendation.

Vanessa wrote letters.

Marcus preserved them.

He did not give them to Caleb immediately.

One afternoon Caleb asked.

“Does she say sorry?”

Marcus looked up from dinner.

“What?”

“Vanessa.”

He had not mentioned the letters.

“Why?”

“I heard Grandma talking.”

Marcus sighed.

Of course.

Denise remained an excellent grandmother and terrible covert operator.

“Yes.”

“She wrote.”

“Can I see?”

Marcus hesitated.

Caleb noticed.

“You always say it’s my story.”

That sentence came from therapy.

Marcus nodded.

“With Dr. Shah.”

Caleb rolled his eyes.

“Everything is Dr. Shah.”

“Correct.”

They read the first letter together in her office.

Vanessa wrote:

Caleb,

I am sorry I cut your hair after you said no.

I told myself I was making you look nice.

That was not the truth.

The truth is I wanted control.

Your hair reminded people of your mother, and I was jealous of how much she was still loved.

That was an adult feeling.

I made it your problem.

I should not have.

Caleb stopped.
