Darius set his broken phone on the hood of his van and rolled his right shoulder carefully, testing the range of motion. It moved. It hurt, but it moved. The scrape on his forearm had mostly stopped bleeding; he pressed a clean rag against it and held it there.Brent detached from Tyler and walked toward him. He stopped about four feet away. The showmanship was gone—not replaced by anything humble, but compressed into something more calculated. His voice dropped below the range that carried to the surrounding crowd."Here's what I'm thinking," Brent said. "Tyler's footage from the last couple minutes—you grabbing me, the whole thing—that's a problem for you. I'm a regional champion with a documented record. You're a mechanic. You want to explain to a judge why you put your hands on me?"Darius looked at him without speaking."I'm not looking to make your life difficult," Brent continued. "You pack up, you go, we both say nothing. I tell Pauline it was a misunderstanding. You keep whatever reputation you've got. That's a good deal."It was framed as generosity. The framing was precise: if Darius accepted, he disappeared from the story; if he argued, he gave Brent something else to use. The offer had no version in which Darius came out with anything more than he'd walked in with.Darius let the offer sit in the air for a moment. Then he said:"The door repair and the gauge are your responsibility, regardless of what either of us says or doesn't say. That part isn't negotiable." He looked at Brent steadily. "An apology is a separate question."Brent's jaw shifted. "I'm not apologizing.""I know," Darius said. "That's why I said it's a separate question."He turned away from Brent and walked to the driver's side of the Express van. He opened the door and reached across to the dash cam mounted on the windshield. He pressed the menu button, navigated to the playback screen, and unclipped the unit from its mount. He walked back to where Pauline was standing and held the camera so the two-inch screen faced her."This has been recording since 7:48 this morning," he said. "It has a wide-angle lens, and the microphone picks up at about 25 feet in low ambient noise. I'd like you to see the beginning of this."Pauline looked at the camera. She looked at Brent. Then she looked at Devon, who had taken three steps closer without appearing to make a decision about it."Go ahead," Pauline said.Darius pressed play.
