"I know. I'm sorry."

Jack's expression softened. "You have nothing to apologize for. You protected our little girl. You stayed strong. Now let me take it from here."

Several people in the crowd quietly wiped away tears. Even some officers arriving as backup looked uncomfortable. Ryan noticed the sympathy shifting. He couldn't allow that. He raised his voice: "Enough!" He pointed toward Jack. "If you interfere again, I'll arrest you, too."

The parking lot fell silent. Nobody believed what they had just heard: arrest a Marine for speaking to his restrained pregnant wife.

Jack slowly turned toward Ryan. His voice remained perfectly controlled. "You can certainly try."

Before Ryan could respond, Sam King's phone vibrated. He stepped several feet away to answer. "King."

A voice came through immediately: "We traced the anonymous 911 call."

Sam's eyes narrowed. "To where?"

"It didn't come from a civilian."

He froze. "Repeat that."

"It originated from a department-issued mobile device."

Sam looked toward Ryan and Tom. Neither officer noticed him.

The voice continued, "And that's not all. The phone belongs to someone inside their own precinct."

Sam slowly lowered the phone. Months of scattered evidence suddenly fit together. This had never been an unfortunate misunderstanding; someone inside the department had deliberately created this confrontation.

He looked toward Jack this time. The nod between them carried a completely different meaning. The operation they had spent months quietly building had just uncovered its missing piece.

Sam King slipped his phone back into his pocket, his expression unreadable. He had just received the confirmation they had been chasing for nearly six months: the anonymous 911 call had not come from a frightened citizen. It had originated from a department-issued phone assigned to someone inside the very precinct responsible for the arrest. Someone had deliberately lured officers into confronting Mia.

But Sam wasn't ready to expose that truth—not yet. The people behind it still believed they were winning. He intended to keep it that way for a few more minutes.

Ryan Fox noticed Sam watching him. "Who exactly are you?" he demanded.

Sam smiled politely. "A concerned observer."

Ryan scoffed. "I don't like observers."

"I'm sure you don't."

Ryan took another step closer. "If you're federal, show me your orders."

Sam shrugged. "If I had any, you wouldn't be asking."

Tom Reed shot Ryan a warning glance. "Leave him."

Ryan lowered his voice. "Something about this doesn't feel right."

Tom answered quietly, "Then we finish this fast."

Only seconds later, another black SUV entered the shopping plaza. Unlike Jack's vehicle, this one carried city government plates. Captain Dan Hill climbed out wearing his command uniform. The officers immediately straightened.

Ryan looked relieved. "Captain."

Dan surveyed the scene. His eyes paused briefly on Mia lying handcuffed beside the ambulance. "What happened?"

Ryan spoke confidently. "Possible kidnapping investigation."

Dan looked toward the baby supplies. "Evidence?"

"Still checking. Witnesses conflicting."

Dan noticed the hundreds of people recording. His stomach tightened. Then he saw the television news vans arriving. A local helicopter circled overhead. This had become far bigger than anyone expected. He motioned Ryan and Tom away from the crowd. "Tell me everything."

Ryan summarized the incident. He conveniently omitted the doctor's repeated warnings. He never mentioned forcing Mia face down, nor did he mention ignoring witnesses.

When he finished, Dan looked unconvinced. "Anonymous caller?"

"Yes."

"Any missing child reports?"

Ryan hesitated. "Not yet."

Dan frowned. "So no victim?"

"No."

"No stolen property?"

"No."

"No evidence?"

Ryan shifted uncomfortably. "We're still investigating."

Dan looked toward Mia again. "Then why is she still in cuffs?"

Ryan answered quickly, "Officer safety."

Dan opened his mouth to respond, but Tom interrupted: "The livestreams are making us look bad."

Ryan nodded. "If we release her now, everyone will assume we were wrong."

Dan slowly looked from one officer to the other. He recognized exactly what was happening: his men were no longer making decisions based on evidence; they were making decisions based on pride.

Unfortunately, Dan had spent years protecting officers from public embarrassment. Old habits were difficult to break. He exhaled slowly. "Finish your paperwork."

Ryan smiled. "I knew you'd understand."

Dan didn't answer.

Meanwhile, Mia's condition continued worsening. Eva Lee looked increasingly worried. She checked the fetal heartbeat again; it was present, but slower—too slow. She walked directly toward Dan.

"Captain."

He turned. "I'm Dr. Eva Lee."

"I know who you are."

"You need to order these officers to remove the handcuffs immediately."

Dan looked toward Ryan. "She's still detained."

Eva stepped even closer. "Captain, if this baby dies because your officers refused medical care, every decision made today will be examined under a microscope."

Dan remained silent.

She continued: "I've documented every request, every refusal, and every minute she has remained restrained."

Dan's expression changed slightly. "You documented it?"

"Every second."

Ryan suddenly looked nervous. Tom did, too. Neither had expected the physician to create an official timeline.

Across the parking lot, Zoe Lane's livestream crossed half a million viewers. National news accounts had begun reposting clips. The comments were exploding: Who is protecting those officers? Why hasn't anyone stopped this? The Marine is still standing there. He's showing more discipline than everyone else.

Jack never moved. He remained beside Mia so that she could hear his voice, but careful not to give Ryan an excuse to escalate. He knelt just beyond the line the officers had drawn.
