The gym was very quiet.

Emma had never told anyone. Not her therapist, not in any real detail. Not her sister. Not the chaplain who visited her bed in Germany. There were things she legally could not say, and things she simply never had.

But she looked at Jake. Nineteen years old. Standing at the edge of the same door every young fighter stands at, the one that leads either toward being a protector or toward being a weapon. And she thought maybe he needed to hear it more than she needed to keep it.

"I can't tell you where," she said slowly. "Or why we were there. Or who sent us. Those things aren't mine to tell."

Jake nodded.

"But I can tell you about Danny."

She took a breath.

"Danny Reyes was the funniest person I ever served with. He told terrible jokes. Really terrible. He'd tell them in the worst possible moments, on planes, in briefings, in the middle of the night when nobody could sleep. He had a little boy back home named Mateo. He showed everybody pictures. Every single day. Mateo's first tooth. Mateo in a cowboy hat. Mateo asleep on the dog."

She smiled, just slightly.

"We went into a village one night to bring someone out. A girl. She was about Noah's age. She'd been taken, and we were there to bring her home. It was supposed to be quiet. In and out. It wasn't."

Her voice stayed level. Only her hands moved, closing slowly into fists on her knees, then opening again.

"Things went wrong. There was a vehicle. There was fire. I had the girl. I was carrying her toward the extraction point and my leg got hit, and I went down, and she went down with me. And I remember thinking, very clearly, this is it. This is how it ends. I couldn't get up. I couldn't get her out."

She paused.

"Danny came back for us. He wasn't supposed to. He was already clear. He came back across forty meters of open ground, and he put himself between us and what was coming, and he stayed there. He stayed there long enough."

Jake didn't move.

"The girl made it home," Emma said. "I made it home. Danny didn't."

"For a long time," Emma said, "I was angry. At him, for coming back. At myself, for falling. I left the Navy because I didn't know how to be that person anymore. I didn't know how to walk into another night like that one and not see him there. I thought my life was over. That the best part of me had died on that road."

"What changed?" Jake asked, very quietly.

"Mateo," Emma said. "I went to see Danny's family, a year after. I brought them some of his things. Mateo was five by then. And he asked me if his dad was brave. I said yes. The bravest man I ever knew. And then he asked me if his dad was scared."

She looked up at Jake, and her eyes were wet.

"I said yes. Of course he was scared. Everybody's scared. And Mateo thought about that for a long time, the way little kids do. And then he said, 'So he was scared, but he loved you more than he was scared.'"
