Every number, he said. Then the timeline doesn't change what it is. She looked back at the documents. It changes how fast we move. He came to the table, stood across from her.

2 weeks, 13 days, she corrected. The session is a Thursday. Today is Thursday. He looked at the spread of documents. What are you looking for?

The proxy clause. She found the page, pulled it. If an investor calls an interim session, the agenda is limited to items specified in the notice. Daniel's notice listed two items, capital allocation review and organizational structure optimization. She said the phrase with a flatness that made its meaning clear.

Organizational structure optimization is how you say we're eliminating a role in board language. Malcolm looked at the document. That's a broad clause. It could cover anything. It could.

She set the page down. Which means Barbara chose vote is even more critical. If she reads organizational structure as only about the SVP role, we have a narrow fight. If she reads it as broader, Daniel can use the session to push multiple changes. Then we need to talk to Barbara directly, Malcolm said.

Not through Linda directly. Clare looked at him. You want to go to a board member directly. I want to give the person whose vote is decisive the best possible information before she walks into that room. He held her gaze.

Is there a governance reason that's a problem? She considered for a moment. No. Board members can receive information from employees at any level. It's not common, but it's not prohibited.

A pause. It would be unusual for you to be in that meeting. Unusual isn't the same as wrong. She looked at him for a long moment. He had the sense that she was running the calculation, not whether it was the right move, but whether she was willing to put him in that position.

Whether she was willing to let someone else carry weight, she'd always carried alone. Tuesday, she said finally. I'll set the meeting with Barbara for Tuesday. You'll be there. He nodded.

And Malcolm, she met his eyes. When we walk into that meeting, we walk in together, not as CEO and operations manager, as a unified leadership position. She paused. That means if Daniel or anyone else tries to frame this as you acting outside your lane, the framing is wrong because your lane and mine are the same lane. Another pause.

Are you comfortable with that? He thought about what that meant. The visibility of it, the way it would read to the board, to Daniel, to anyone watching the geometry of who stood next to whom in a room where power was being contested. He thought about what his father's rule had cost him. All the rooms he'd navigated carefully, making himself easy to tolerate.

"I'm more than comfortable," he said. The next 8 days moved at a pace that Malcolm later struggled to reconstruct cleanly. Not because they were chaotic. They were the opposite of chaotic. They were the most focused days he'd experienced in years, but because intensity compresses time.

Looking back, he could identify the moments. He just couldn't always account for the hours between them. Jordan brought him coffee every morning at 8 and asked no questions. Deshawn ran secondary data pulls without being asked twice. Linda Park was a constant, quiet presence, not managing just available, which was the most useful thing an experienced person could be.

During a high stakes week, Clare and Malcolm worked in parallel and together in the pattern they'd found in the business center on the last day of the retreat, close enough to catch each other's errors far enough to think independently. She revised the framing on the structural analysis twice. The second revision was better than the first. He told her so. She accepted it without ceremony and moved on.

On Friday afternoon, she sent him a message. Daniel filed an amendment to the agenda. He's added a third item. Performance benchmarking for senior leadership. Malcolm read it twice.

He typed back, "That's about me specifically. Three dots then most likely. " It's broadly worded enough to cover several roles, but the timing is not a coincidence. He sat with that for a moment. The escalation was clean from Daniel's perspective. Eliminate the role if you can and if you can't question the person in it.

Two paths to the same destination. He typed, "Does this change Tuesday? " Her response came fast. It makes Tuesday more important. We go in with the full picture. No omissions.

He set the phone down, picked up his pen, went back to work. Saturday morning, he took Amara to the farmers market, which was their thing. Had been their thing since she was four and had demanded with great seriousness to know where strawberries came from. They walked the stalls. She carried the small canvas bag he'd bought her with her name stitched on it.

And she interrogated every vendor about the origin of every product with a thoroughess that made several of them laugh. And one older gentleman tell her she should be a journalist. I'm going to be a marine biologist, she told him. Seriously. That's a good job, he said.

Because of the whales. She picked up an apple, examined it, put it back. Daddy, if two people are friends, but they also argue a lot, are they still friends? He looked at her. Where's this coming from?

Tyler and I had another argument about whether sharks are more dangerous than hippos. She selected a different apple. He's wrong about the hippos, but I still want to eat lunch with him. Malcolm put the apple in her canvas bag. You can be right and still want to eat lunch with someone.

How? Because being right isn't the only reason you eat lunch with people. He found a cluster of strawberries, checked them, added them to the bag. Sometimes you eat lunch with someone because they make the wrong feel interesting. She thought about that.

Then Tyler makes the wrong interesting. Sounds like it. She considered this arrangement for another moment, then apparently accepted it and moved on to the next stall with the efficiency of someone who had resolved a philosophical question and was ready to think about tomatoes. Malcolm watched her go. He thought about arguing across a conference table for 3 years with someone who made the wrong feel interesting.

He thought about how long it had taken him to notice what that actually meant. Tuesday came. Barbara Cho's office was on the 32nd floor of the building. The board used for formal meetings downtown, not Meridian's building. Neutral ground, the kind of space that was decorated to feel warm and still managed to feel like somewhere decisions with weight were made.
