Bear Attack Survivor’s Haunting Farewell Note to Wife After Gathering Pieces of His Own Flesh

The Man Who Survived a Grizzly: Jeremy Evans’ Harrowing Fight for Life

Jeremy Evans’ life changed forever in August 2017, when a brutal grizzly bear attack in the wild forests of Alberta, Canada, left him torn apart and convinced he would never again see his family. What began as an ordinary hunting trip became a fight for survival against one of nature’s most feared predators.

A Routine Hunt Turns Deadly

The 41-year-old maintenance supervisor had set out on August 24 to search for a ram. The morning was calm, and Jeremy expected nothing more than a long trek through rugged backcountry terrain. Instead, he stumbled into a deadly situation no hunter ever wants to face.

At first, Jeremy noticed what looked like a “little brown thing” darting across his path only a few feet ahead. At first, he assumed it was small game, but realization soon struck — it was a bear cub. And where there’s a cub, the mother is never far away. Within seconds, she appeared, charging forward to defend her young with unstoppable force.

The First Attack

Jeremy instinctively reached for the bear spray tucked in his backpack. But before he could pull it out, the mother grizzly was already on top of him. In desperation, he grabbed his bicycle and hurled it at the massive predator. The move struck her but also shredded his hand, leaving him bleeding and vulnerable.

The bear retreated briefly, only to return moments later with even greater fury. Jeremy turned and tried to climb a nearby tree, but before he could pull himself up, the animal clamped its jaws around his leg and dragged him violently back to the ground.

Torn Apart and Barely Conscious

The savage mauling left Jeremy’s body shredded. He later described the horrifying moment in an interview:

  • “My left eye was hanging out of the socket. It was facing down. In order to really see, I either had to lift up my eye or lean my head way back.”

  • “I remember feeling my face and nothing felt the same. My jaw was hanging down on the left side and all my teeth were exposed.”

The grizzly eventually wandered off, leaving him bleeding and broken on the forest floor. Half-blind, his body ripped apart, Jeremy realized he might only have minutes to live.

Messages of Goodbye

Mustering what little strength he had, Jeremy crawled to his backpack and reached for his firearm. Scattered around him were chilling reminders of the attack — a torn moustache, part of his goatee, sections of his face, and even his ear ripped away.

Believing his end was near, he pulled out his phone and typed farewell messages to his wife.

One heartbreaking note read:
“Whoever finds this please let my wife know I tried to make it. But there is [no] chance, that bear really [fed] me up.”

Another message followed:
“I am pretty sure this is the end. I am very tired and I feel like I am going to pass out. If I do I won’t wake up.”

A Fight Beyond the Forest

Against all odds, Jeremy survived long enough to be rescued and rushed to a hospital. His battle, however, had only begun.

Doctors performed five major surgeries and over 15 additional reconstructive procedures to repair the devastating injuries. They painstakingly rebuilt his jaw, treated his torn face, and stabilized his eye. Each procedure was grueling, but Jeremy refused to give up.

Even as his body slowly began to heal, the psychological wounds ran deep. Jeremy developed severe PTSD, plagued by flashbacks and panic attacks. Therapy became a lifeline, helping him confront the terror that nearly ended his life.

Living With the Scars

Today, Jeremy carries permanent scars as reminders of that day — both visible on his face and hidden within his mind. He knows he was just seconds away from death and often reflects on how fragile survival can be.

Yet he also sees his experience as a story of resilience. Against impossible odds, he endured one of the most ferocious animal attacks imaginable and lived to tell it.

His journey reminds us of the raw power of nature, the unpredictability of wilderness, and the strength of human will when pushed to the edge.

Jeremy’s life will never be the same — but his survival stands as a powerful testament to courage, endurance, and the will to keep fighting even when hope seems lost.
