Wei looked at Darius, then at the water pitcher. Darius saw his hand reach for the glass. Something inside him became very still.

Wei lifted the glass. Darius approached. "Would you like more water?"

Wei looked at him. For a second, Darius thought he might simply answer. Instead, Wei tipped the glass. Water struck Darius directly in the face.

The dining room went silent. The glass came down onto the table. Darius stood motionless. Water dripped from his eyelashes. His shirt was soaked.

Wei pointed toward the hallway. "Go wash your hands and your face."

Darius slowly wiped his cheek. Then Wei leaned toward his companions and said something in Mandarin. The men laughed.

Darius looked at him. He understood the sentence—every word, every tone, every deliberate humiliation hidden inside it. He could answer in Mandarin. He could make the entire table understand exactly how much he had heard. But Darius remembered his father's notebook: Listen first, answer second.

And as he stood there in the middle of the silent dining room, he finally realized something: he had been listening long enough.

Darius looked directly at Wei. For the first time that evening, the young waiter didn't move away. He simply stood there, water dripping from his jaw onto the polished floor. Then he spoke—not in English, but in Mandarin.

The sentence was short, precise, and delivered with a natural Beijing accent that sounded so effortless that Wei's expression changed before he had even processed the words.

The laughter stopped. One of Wei's companions slowly lowered his glass. The other two looked at Darius.

Wei stared at him. "You speak Mandarin?"

Darius nodded. "Yes."

Wei's face had lost the confidence it had carried all evening. "You understood me?"

"I understood everything."

Nobody at the table laughed now. Darius didn't raise his voice. He didn't repeat the insult. He didn't threaten Wei. He simply picked up the empty glass. "Would you like another one?"

Wei looked at the glass in Darius's hand, then at Darius. "No."

Darius nodded. "All right."

He walked away. That was it. No speech, no dramatic confrontation—just a young waiter returning to work while four wealthy men sat at a table trying to process what had happened.

But the room had changed. People were watching, not because Darius had made a scene, but because he hadn't. A woman at the neighboring table leaned toward her husband. "What did he say?"

"I don't know."
