Raymond Fletcher walked through the crowd. He didn't rush. He didn't raise his voice. He moved with the slow, deliberate calm of a man who had spent thirty years making decisions that moved markets and ended careers. People stepped aside as he passed. Some recognized him immediately; others saw the look on his face and moved on instinct.
He reached the stage at the front of the ballroom. A podium stood there, flanked by two large screens meant for the evening's presentation: a quarterly update, a partnership announcement, the usual corporate theater.
Raymond stepped behind the podium. He set his briefcase on the floor. He looked out at the room.
"Good evening," he said. His voice was calm, measured; the microphone carried it to every corner. "For those who don't know me, my name is Raymond Fletcher. I'm the CEO of Fletcher Global Industries. This is my gala, my building, my company."
He paused. His eyes swept the room until they found the Harrington table. Victoria was sitting rigidly, her champagne untouched. Preston had returned to his seat, his smirk replaced by something that looked almost like concern. Sloan had lowered her phone for the first time all evening.
"Tonight was supposed to be a celebration," Raymond continued. "We were going to announce a $550 million acquisition deal with the Harrington Group—the biggest partnership in Fletcher Global's history." He let the number settle. "$550 million. That's what was on the table."
Past tense.
A murmur swept through the crowd. Board members glanced at each other. Investors leaned forward. The energy in the room shifted from confusion to attention.
Raymond reached into his briefcase and pulled out a tablet. He connected it to the presentation system. The two large screens on either side of the stage flickered to life.
"Before I explain why that deal no longer exists, I'd like to show you something."
The screens lit up with security camera footage. Timestamp: 7:42 p.m. The CEO's table. The image was sharp, high-definition, multiple angles—the kind of security system a billion-dollar company installs to protect its assets.
The first clip played: Preston blocking the entrance, pushing Camille backward, his mouth moving: Who would invite a black woman? The audio was clear; the ballroom security cameras recorded sound. Victoria's face went white.
The second clip: Sloan pointing her phone: This will be fun. Victoria smiling: Teach her a lesson. Preston's hands gripping the edge of the table.
