She didn't cry. She didn't drop her head. She looked straight at Cornelius Braddock and waited for the laughter to end on its own. When it did, she spoke."I don't need you to adopt me." Her voice was quiet, level, almost gentle. "I need a dance floor."The laughter stopped like a faucet turned off. Cornelius blinked. His smile froze. Two hundred people shifted in their chairs. He stepped forward, his shoes clicking against the plywood. "What did you just say to me?""I said I need a dance floor."His neck turned red from the collar up. His fingers squeezed the microphone so hard the knuckles went white. For three full seconds, nobody in the room made a sound. Then Cornelius saw the bag—the clear plastic bag hanging from Daphne's left hand. He snatched it. Daphne's arm jerked forward, but she didn't pull back. He reached inside and pulled out the silver dance shoes, held them up in the light: scuffed leather, worn straps, a heel no higher than an inch."This?" He turned to the audience, the shoes dangling from his fingers like evidence in a trial. "This is what she was going to dance in? These belong in a dumpster."He dropped the shoes. One bounced off the edge of the stage and tumbled onto the floor; the other landed flat, sole up, near a donor's chair. The woman pulled her feet back like the shoe might be contagious."Black people pick up other people's trash and think it makes them royalty." He shook his head. "Somebody get this girl a damn reality check."
