He hadn't pushed Adrian toward the car. He'd cleared the path.

Zuri sat with that for a long time. Then she went and knocked on Patricia's door.

"I need to show you something," she said.

Patricia watched the footage three times without speaking. The first time, she was looking at what Zuri was pointing to: the small leftward step, the word to the guard, the corridor widening. The second time, she was looking for reasons it meant something other than what it appeared to mean. The third time, she picked up her phone and called Thomas Garrett.

She didn't describe it in detail over the phone. She said, "You need to come here tonight. Zuri found something on the plaza footage." She paused. "Bring Mr. Cole."

They came within the hour.

Adrian watched the clip four times, each time with a stillness that became progressively more absolute—the kind of stillness that wasn't calm, but was the controlled containment of something that wanted very badly to move. Thomas watched it once, then stepped away to the window, and the set of his shoulders said everything his face didn't show.

Zuri sat at the kitchen table and watched them watch it. She had not been wrong. She'd learned enough about the way adults responded to things to read confirmation even in silence.

"He didn't push you toward the car," she said, when no one had spoken for a minute. "He cleared the way so you'd take the path that went past it naturally, so it would look like you chose it."

Adrian turned from the screen. He looked at her with the expression she'd come to recognize, the one that combined something like respect with something like grief.

"Yes," he said. "That's exactly what he did."

The following morning, Adrian called Marcus Hale to his office. Not Thomas's office, not a conference room, not a neutral space: his own office, the one on the thirty-second floor with the long windows and the desk he had, since the company's first real building, moved from location to location as Cole Dynamics grew around it. He wanted Marcus in that room because it was the room where they'd had every serious conversation for twelve years, and because Adrian believed, perhaps stubbornly, that honest confrontations should happen in honest places.

Marcus arrived at 9:15. He wore the same kind of suit he always wore: well-cut, dark, nothing showy. He sat in the chair across the desk without being asked, the way he always had, and folded his hands in his lap.

"Marcus," Adrian said.

"Adrian."

There was a pause that lasted several seconds and felt much longer.
