Black-Owned Social Platform ‘SPILL’ Launches Equity Crowdfunding Round for Users

They’re giving users a chance at ownership in the social-media sector!

SPILL, the next-generation social-media platform that is redefining how culture is shared and created, is inviting its community to invest in its future. On Monday, March 10th, SPILL launched an equity-crowdfunding round, giving people the opportunity to own a piece of the platform and play a role in shaping the future of online conversation (Axios, 2025).

Launched in June 2023 by former Twitter (now X) employee Alphonzo “Phonz” Terrell, SPILL set out to create a more inclusive and safe space in the world of social media (Time, 2023). Already, SPILL has reported significant progress since its inception: over 500,000 downloads and more than US$5 million in funding from venture-capital firms such as MaC Venture Capital and celebrity supporters including Kerry Washington (Because of Them We Can, 2025).

SPILL recently surpassed US$1 million in annualised revenue, signalling its strength as a growing digital force (Because of Them We Can, 2025). Its commitment to enhancing the user experience has resulted in more than 25 new feature builds in 2024 alone. These include gaming features like “Spades” (which reportedly accrued over half a million minutes of gameplay), AI-powered content moderation, and gender-pronoun identification. As other social-media companies roll back safeguards and diversity measures, SPILL is doing the opposite—prioritising inclusion, safety, and creative expression (Because of Them We Can, 2025). The platform emphasises that the cultural architects of the internet—the people who set trends yet are often overlooked—should have a space that acknowledges and amplifies their voices.

Now, with the new crowdfunding round, users can secure equity in the platform with a minimum investment of just US$250. The goal is to make the crowd-round accessible and easy. Investors receive exclusive benefits: SPILL Investor Profile Badges, early access to new features, first-looks at company updates, invites to exclusive events, and branded merchandise. Since the initiation of the investment round on March 10, users have already invested nearly US$300,000 (Because of Them We Can, 2025).

“We’re building SPILL to be more than a successful business—it’s a movement proving that platforms thrive when they put safety, culture, and real people first,” said Terrell, founder and CEO of SPILL. “This crowd round is a unique opportunity to co-own the future of social media and help create the vibrant, inclusive spaces that our culture needs now more than ever” (Because of Them We Can, 2025).

SPILL continues to be a go-to platform for those seeking a more joyful, culturally rich, and inclusive social-media experience. Given the current social-media climate, platforms like SPILL are attracting new users looking for safer digital spaces to socialise. Between Q3 and Q4 of 2024, SPILL reported a 282 % increase in sign-ups, and January 2025 marked its strongest month of user growth since launch (Axios, 2025). On the business side, SPILL is projected to generate more revenue in Q1 2025 than it did in all of 2024, showing that advertisers are taking notice and investing in the platform’s engaged and influential audience (SPILL News, 2025).

As part of SPILL’s continued expansion, Kenya Parham—formerly VP of Community and Partnerships—has been promoted to Chief Growth Officer. With a passion for fostering authentic community engagement, Parham will lead efforts to ensure that SPILL remains the premier space for cultural conversations and digital expression (Because of Them We Can, 2025).

SPILL is a visual-conversation app where users—affectionately known as “Spillionaires”—can add up to 90 characters of text to an image, GIF or video to spark meaningful discussions. The app allows users to share, quote and comment on “Spills”; its “Spillboard” feature makes it easy to discover trending conversations globally. Users can also engage in live discussions, play games, and join digital “Tea Parties” (Because of Them We Can, 2025).

The platform is currently available for download on iOS and Android. To become an early investor and user, visit the investment page on SPILL’s official website.
