If You See These 4 Signs in Bean Sprouts, Don’t Bring Them Home — No Matter How Cheap!

Bean sprouts are a common ingredient in many Vietnamese meals, but not everyone knows how to choose safe and chemical-free ones. Recently, the Dak Lak Provincial Police discovered several facilities using a banned substance called 6-Benzylaminopurine to accelerate sprout growth, making them look plump and shiny.
This chemical is not approved for food production and can be harmful to your health.

👉 Here are 4 warning signs that your bean sprouts may have been soaked in chemicals:

⚠️ 1. Shiny white color, thick stems, and no roots

Naturally grown sprouts have an off-white or slightly yellow color with thin, long roots. If you see sprouts that are bright white, overly plump, and have no roots, they were likely treated with chemicals to speed up growth.

⚠️ 2. Short or dark roots

Clean bean sprouts take 3–5 days to grow, producing long, healthy roots. Chemically treated ones, however, have short, weak, or dark roots because of accelerated development.

⚠️ 3. Unusually long, hollow stems

Normal sprouts are about 5–6 cm long and firm. If they’re too long, hollow inside, or soft and chewy, that’s a red flag — these are usually the result of growth stimulants and contain fewer nutrients.

⚠️ 4. Strange or pungent smell

Fresh bean sprouts naturally smell like mung beans. If there’s a strong, unpleasant, or chemical-like odor, don’t buy them.

🌿 The Benefits of Safe, Natural Bean Sprouts

When grown properly, bean sprouts are rich in vitamin C, vitamin K, folate, magnesium, plant-based protein, and fiber. They can:

  • 💓 Lower cholesterol and protect the heart

  • 🩸 Regulate blood sugar levels

  • 💪 Boost immunity and help prevent certain cancers

Tip: Buy bean sprouts from reputable stores or supermarkets, or even better — grow your own at home for a safe and nutritious source of food for your family.
