His hands were shaking now openly. He put his hands on my little girl's life. Olivia, he did exactly what I knew he'd do. I told myself I was paranoid. I checked the locks twice and told myself I was being crazy.

The color had drained from Olivia's face. But underneath the shock, something else was rising in her. Something Marcus had never seen before. Not the boardroom armor. Not the cool control.

This was older and hotter. This was rage. That directory access, she said slowly. A former staff login. Marcus.

Who do we know who used to have a way into a lot of places he shouldn't? Who spent two years with his fingers and everything, who still has friends in every building in this city that owes him money. Her jaw was tight. He didn't just look up your daughter. He wanted you to find out.

He looked her up. This is a message. This is him telling you he can reach the one thing you'd burn the world to protect. Her voice dropped to something dangerous. He's not trying to win me back.

He never was. He's trying to make you so afraid that you leave. Because if you leave, I'm alone again. And an alone Olivia is an Olivia the board can manage. And a manageable Olivia is one he can eventually.

She stopped. It was never about me being with him. It was about me being without you. You're the thing that made me ungovernable. He's trying to remove you.

Marcus stared at her. The pieces slid together in his head with a click that made him sick. He can't reach me, Marcus said. He tried. I don't scare, so he found the one thing that does.

Lily. Lily. They stood in the ruined kitchen, the smell of pancakes still in the air. A dinosaur movie starting up in the next room, and the whole warm, easy morning turned to ash between them. "I have to think about her," Marcus said.

And Olivia heard it. Heard the thing coming before he said it heard three years of a father's terror rise up and reach for the oldest most familiar tool it had. Olivia, I have to think about my daughter. If being with you means men like him start circling her, showing up at her school, getting her address, using her as a as a pressure point to get at me, then I can't I can't do that to her. She's already lost one.

Don't. Olivia's voice cracked like a whip. Do not finish that sentence with the words Daniel Reed put in your mouth. That is his sentence, Marcus. He wrote it for you at the gala and he mailed it to your daughter's school to make sure you'd say it out loud.

And you're about to say it right on schedule, exactly like he planned. Marcus flinched. He is counting on you being a good father, Olivia said. And now there were tears in it. Furious ones.

That's the whole trap. He knows you'll do anything to protect her. So, he's made loving me look like a danger to her. And he's betting that your love for Lily is so big, it'll make you throw away your own happiness to keep her safe. He's weaponized the best thing about you.

And if you leave me right now in this kitchen over this, he wins, Marcus. He wins without ever showing his face again. He gets exactly what he came for. And I lose you. And Lily loses the woman who was about to love her.

And you lose the first easy morning you've had in 3 years. And he gets to go home to his big empty house and feel powerful again. The dinosaur movie played on in the next room. Marcus's chest was heaving. "So, what do I do?" he said, and it came out broken.

"Tell me what a father does, Olivia. Because everything in me is screaming to grab that little girl and disappear somewhere he can't find us. That's what my body's telling me to do right now. Run, protect her, make it stop. I know," Olivia said softer now.

Coming closer. I know it is, and that instinct kept her alive and safe and loved for 3 years, and it is a good instinct, and I would never tell you to ignore it. She took his face in both her hands. But Marcus, you cannot outrun a man like Daniel by being smaller. You tried that at the gala, remember?

You tried to shrink and it didn't work. What worked? The thing that actually made him run was you standing up in the middle of the room and telling the truth in front of everyone. You don't beat men like this in the dark. You beat them in the light.

You drag what they did into the open where everyone can see it, and you make it so the cost of touching you is higher than any satisfaction he'd get from it. Marcus was still. Meaning what? Meaning we don't hide. Olivia's eyes were fierce.

We do the opposite of what he wants. He wants us afraid and separate and quiet. So, we're going to be loud and together and completely unafraid. I'm going to make some calls. That directory breach is a crime, Marcus.

Accessing a children's school database with a stolen login. That's not a rich man being petty. That's a felony. And I have a very good lawyer and an even better head of security. And I am going to make certain that Daniel Reed understands in writing from people with badges that your daughter is the single most protected child in the state of Georgia starting this afternoon.

She held his gaze. You've spent three years protecting everybody alone. Let me protect one thing. Let me protect her with you. That's what he can't stand.
