Corrupt Cops Bullied A Quiet Old Man — Then 50 Men In Black Arrived To Protect Him
"It's going to be okay, baby," he said. "I know," she said. "You always figure it out. She left." He sat with that for a moment.
Then he stood up and knocked on Evelyn's office door. "Come in." She was behind her desk, two phones, her laptop, and a legal pad covered in notes. Her attorney was on one own, her communications director on speaker on the other. She looked like someone running a war room and winning on logistics while losing on sleep.
He held up a hand. She paused the speaker. I found three places in the article where Charles overreached. Darius said, "He implies access to internal financial records that he couldn't have obtained legally after the investigation subpoena was filed. If your attorney looks at the timestamps on those documents versus the date the subpoena froze access.
Evelyn's attorney still on the phone said, "Say that again." Darius said it again. There was a pause. Then the attorney said, "Hold on." The sound of rapid typing.
Another pause. He's right. If those documents were accessed after the 15th, that's a violation of the preservation order. That's not just civil exposure. That's potentially criminal contempt.
Evelyn looked at Darius across the desk. He shrugged. I noticed the timestamps. She picked up the other phone. "Call me back in 10 minutes," she said to whoever was on it and ended the call.
"Sit down," she said to Darius. "He sat." "My attorney is going to file an emergency motion this morning," she said. If this holds up, Charles's article becomes evidence of contempt rather than whistleblowing. She paused.
That changes the story by tonight. If the filing is fast enough, it will be. She was already typing. I need 2 hours. Can you?
I'll handle the school pickup. I'll keep Maya out of this. I wasn't going to ask you to. I know you weren't. He met her eyes.
Do your work. She looked at him for a moment that lasted slightly longer than necessary. Then she nodded nodded and went back to her screen. He got up to leave. Darius.
Her voice stopped him at the door. He turned. She was still looking at her screen typing, but she said the article the way they described you. She paused. I'm sorry.
I know that. Don't. He said. She looked up. Don't apologize for what he wrote.
Darius said. Charles wrote it. You didn't. He held her gaze. And anybody who knows me doesn't need a correction.
Anybody who doesn't know me and already believes that a correction won't help. He paused. So, let's just beat him and be done with it. She stared at him. How are you this calm?
She asked. Not rhetorically. Actually asking, I thought about it. Because being angry at Charles takes energy I need for something more useful, he said. And because I know what I am, I know what I did and why I did it.
He looked at her steadily. Nobody's article changes that. She looked at him for a long-held moment. Then she said very quietly. I want to be that sure of myself someday.
You're closer than you think, he said. He left her to it. By noon, Evelyn's attorney had filed the emergency motion. By 2:00 in the afternoon, a judge had issued a temporary order requiring the publication to note that certain documents in the article were under active legal dispute. By 4, two of the board members who'd been wavering, had sent Evelyn private messages indicating their continued support.
Charles, for the first time since the wedding, had been visibly outmaneuvered on his own terrain. But Darius, picking Maya up from school at 40:07, standing outside in the October air while kids poured through the doors, felt the shape of what was still ahead. Charles wasn't finished. A man like that didn't have one move or two moves. He had contingencies behind contingencies, and somewhere in the structure of what he'd built, there was something they hadn't found yet.
That feeling stayed with him through dinner, through Maya's homework, through the quiet hours of the evening. I was right to trust it. The next move came 12 days later, and it didn't come from Charles directly. It came from Preston Vale. Darius found out from Evelyn's attorney at 6:00 in the morning.
The call that woke him that he took standing in the hallway outside his room with the door closed so Maya wouldn't hear. Preston had apparently spent the weeks since the wedding, deciding that humiliation was better monetized through alliance than through silence. He had gone to Charles, which surprised no one. But he had also gone to two journalists, a rival defense contractor who competed with Sterling Arrow for federal contracts. And most damaging, he had given a deposition to a private investigator retained by an unnamed party in which he stated under sworn conditions that he had personal knowledge that Evelyn Sterling had described her plan to acquire a compliant spouse in a phone call 3 days before the wedding.
He had recorded the call. Darius heard the word recorded and felt the floor shift slightly beneath him. "How bad?" he asked the attorney. "The recording is partially inaudible and taken significantly out of context," the attorney said.
"But acquire a compliant spouse is audible. If it gets published or submitted to the board as an exhibit, it characterizes the entire arrangement in the worst possible light, regardless of the actual facts. Is it authentic, not edited? Our audio expert is reviewing it today. How long before it becomes public?
48 hours, maybe 72. Darius thanked him and ended the call. He stood in the hallway for a moment. Then he went to Evelyn's room and knocked. She opened the door in 20 seconds, which meant she'd already been awake.
She saw his face and said, "You heard?" Just now. She stepped back. He came in. She sat on the edge of a chair near the window and he stood and she said, "Preston recorded me."
"Your attorney said partially inaudible, out of context." The context is She pressed her fingers against her forehead. I was talking to my attorney. I was describing what I needed and I used She stopped. I used language that was transactional because at that point it was transactional.
I didn't know you yet. She looked up at him. It wasn't meant to be cruel. I know that, but if the board hears, they're going to hear it framed the worst possible way. He said, "I know that, too."
