The door opened. Brody came in first, then Colt. They'd been outside, waiting—backup Tyler had apparently arranged for a conversation he'd expected to go differently. They came in fast. Brody was already moving toward Claire before the door had swung back. What happened in the next few seconds would be described differently by the various people who witnessed it, because it happened faster than memory records things cleanly:Brody reached her first. Claire side-stepped his initial grab with a half-turn that cost her no more than a single step. Her right hand found his extended wrist; she applied the same point she'd used on Tyler, but with more rotation this time—a lock that brought the wrist up and behind in a motion that Brody's own forward momentum made worse. He went down to his knees, not because she threw him, but because his body had no alternative given the angle and the physics. She held the position for exactly one second, which was long enough to ensure he understood that trying to stand up quickly would be counterproductive, then released him.Colt had come in from the left. She turned into him before he reached her, using the turn she was already in from releasing Brody, and put her left forearm across his chest at the same moment she hooked her right foot behind his leading ankle. He went backward, controlled; she managed his fall with a hand at his collar so he didn't crack his head on the floor. He landed hard, but clean. She stepped back. Both of them were on the floor; neither of them was injured. The entire thing had taken four seconds.Claire stood in the center of the diner. She was not breathing hard. She looked at Tyler.Tyler was standing against the counter where she'd redirected him. He hadn't moved. He was looking at her with an expression that had moved past anger now, past confusion, into something that sat behind his eyes like a very cold understanding beginning to form. The door opened again. Deputy Lena Marsh walked in—in uniform this time, every piece of it: badge, belt, the full authority of a law enforcement officer on duty, worn with the particular bearing of someone who had decided somewhere between last night and this morning that she was done performing the smaller version of herself. She took in the room: Brody on the floor, Colt on the floor, Tyler against the counter, Claire standing in the center. She walked directly to Brody. She reached down and took his arm. "On your feet," she said, calm, professional. "You're being detained."Then Colt. Then she looked at Tyler."Tyler Mace," she said. "I'm placing you under detention pending federal investigation for threats against a protected witness."Tyler stared at her. "You work for my father," he said."I work for the law," she said. "Which is a different thing. It just took me a while to act like it."
