"And what did you see?" Williams asked.
"Brett blocked her path, shoved her, and tried to hit her. Naomi defended herself. When he stopped, she let go and walked away."
Williams played the full recording. The board watched the entire sequence from the confrontation through Naomi's controlled defensive response and her departure. No trustee looked at a phone or interrupted.
Williams then called Coach Ted Anderson. "Coach Anderson, you lead Westfield's women's wrestling program. Can you describe what Miss Green did in the parking lot?"
Anderson answered like a coach reviewing match footage. Naomi had used standard wrestling control techniques to avoid Brett's strike, redirect him to the ground, and restrain him until the danger stopped. He emphasized that she had not punched or kicked him and had disengaged immediately once she was safe.
"In your professional assessment," Williams asked, "was her response intended to cause harm?"
"No," Anderson said. "It was textbook self-defense. In competition, the sequence would be scored as control. She used what she needed to stop an attack and no more."
Williams produced a medical report from Westfield's campus clinic. Brett had been examined about twelve hours after the encounter. The report documented no bruising, abrasions, swelling, soft-tissue damage, or other injury.
Williams turned toward the board. "A twenty-year-old woman significantly lighter than the student who confronted her used a trained defensive response to stop an unprovoked attack. The other student left without injury. Yet she lost her housing, her scholarship was frozen, and she was suspended before a fair investigation. What exactly is the offense here?"
Nobody answered.
Dr. Coleman turned to Courtney. "Miss Davis, your written statement says Mr. Wilson was standing still when Miss Green attacked him without provocation. Is that correct?"
Courtney nodded. "Yes. He was just standing there and she..."
"We have just watched the complete video," Coleman interrupted. "Would you like to revise your statement?"
Courtney's mouth opened and closed. Her lawyer leaned toward her and whispered. "He might have moved a little," she finally said.
Coleman kept her eyes on Courtney. "The recording shows him block her path, push her, and attempt to strike her. Your written statement says he was stationary. Which version is true?"
Courtney did not answer.
Richard Davis stood from the back row. "This is absurd. My daughter is being interrogated like a criminal. This board exists because of our family's..."
"Mr. Davis," Dr. Coleman said sharply. "You are a member of this board, but today you are present as a parent. You do not have speaking privileges in this proceeding. Sit down."
Richard remained standing for several seconds. Then he sat.
Coleman turned to Naomi. "Miss Green, would you like to make a statement?"
Naomi looked at Monica Williams. Williams nodded.
Naomi stood. She did not grip the table or raise her voice. "I'm twenty years old. I'm an adult. Every decision I make can stay with me for the rest of my life, and I know that better than anyone in this room. That's why I endured an entire semester of what you just saw on that screen."
She paused. "I let someone pour milk over me in front of hundreds of people. I let someone call me an animal. I let someone put a note on my door telling me to go home. I kept walking because I knew exactly what would happen if people decided I was the angry one."
Naomi looked toward the board. "I responded once, when a man much bigger than me tried to hit me. I used the exact kind of control I had been trained to use. I did not strike him or injure him. I let him go as soon as he stopped."
Her voice stayed level. "If that is still a crime, then I honestly don't know what someone like me is supposed to do to be considered safe enough for you."
Nobody spoke. Courtney stared at the tabletop. Brett looked at the floor. Richard Davis sat motionless.
Dr. Coleman removed her glasses and set them beside her papers. She looked down the row of trustees. "I'm calling the vote."
The vote was unanimous, 12 to 0. Not one trustee sided with the Davis family, including members who had attended their fundraising events or represented departments that had benefited from Davis donations. The evidence was too clear, and the university's earlier silence was impossible to explain away.
Dr. Coleman read the decision. All disciplinary action against Naomi Green was rescinded. Her suspension would be expunged from the university record, her housing restored immediately, and her athletic scholarship reinstated in full.
Naomi did not celebrate. She remained seated with her hands folded. Under the table, Lorraine reached over and squeezed her wrist.
Coleman continued. "The board finds that Courtney Davis submitted a materially false written statement and participated in a sustained pattern of targeted harassment against another student. She is suspended from Westfield University for one academic year. Her position as student council president is revoked. If she returns, she will be required to complete a restorative education program."
Courtney's lawyer began to rise. Coleman lifted one finger without looking at him, and he sat back down.
"Brett Wilson is suspended for the remainder of the academic year," Coleman continued. "His athletic scholarship is revoked, and a formal no-contact order is issued regarding Miss Green."
Brett did not move.
