"What did you do?" Claire said."I had kept everything," Nora said. "Every original document, every copy, every note I had written to myself with times and dates. I had kept them at home—not in my locker, not in my desk at the precinct. At home, in a box under my bed." She paused. "They could change what was in the building. They could not change what was in my house."Claire understood. "They deleted the camera footage," Claire said. "But I filed the preservation request before they deleted it. Which means the deletion happened after they received a formal written request to preserve.""Yes. Then the deletion is not a solution for them," Nora said. "It is a problem." A pause. "How are you feeling?" Nora said. "Not how is the case—how are you feeling?"Claire thought about it honestly. "Clear," she said. "Tired, but clear.""Good," Nora said. "Clarity is enough. You do not need to feel brave; you just need to be clear.""Grandma," Claire said, "will you come?"She had not planned to ask that, but it came out before she could decide whether to say it.A silence. "I was already going to," Nora said. "I'm leaving Columbus at noon."She met Marsh at his office at 9:00 a.m. He was already there, a legal pad on his desk with notes on both sides. He was wearing the same jacket he wore every day and looked like a man who had also been awake since early. He said, "I reached the facilities manager for the library renovation project. The fire exit camera system is on a separate network. It was installed in 2019 under a different contract. It runs on an independent recording loop that stores locally before syncing to the university's safety archive." He looked at her. "The main system was deleted. The secondary system was not touched, because whoever deleted the main footage did not know the secondary system existed."Claire sat down. "Does it cover table seven?" she said."Not directly," Marsh said. "The angle is from the fire exit door. It covers the far third of the reading floor. Table seven is at the edge of that coverage." He turned his legal pad around. He had drawn a rough floor plan: table seven was marked, and the fire exit camera angle was marked with a dotted line. "Table seven is just inside it. It will not show faces clearly at that distance," he said. "But it will show the table. It will show a person sitting. It will show someone approaching from behind. It will show the motion of what happened."Claire looked at the floor plan. Motion was enough. Motion was the difference between something happened and nothing happened."How do we get it into the hearing?" she said."I submitted a formal request to the office of general counsel this morning, citing the active preservation order and the deletion of primary footage as grounds for immediate preservation of all secondary systems. I referenced the case number and the timestamp of your original request." He paused. "They cannot ignore a second preservation request when the first one was already violated. That would compound the problem significantly." He looked at her steadily. "The footage should be available to the panel by this afternoon."
