Putting Vaseline in Your Belly Button Overnight: Does It Really Change Your Body?
Putting Vaseline in Your Belly Button Overnight: Does It Really Change Your Body?
A viral health video claims that pouring apple cider vinegar onto a small towel, wringing it out, and wrapping it around the back of your neck can help “drain” a sluggish cluster of lymph nodes, ease tension, and make you feel lighter.
It sounds simple and natural, but the claim is not supported by good evidence. Apple cider vinegar may have some limited uses, but wrapping it around your neck is not a proven way to drain lymph nodes, detox the body, or treat swelling.
The video appears to suggest this routine:
Important: The lymphatic system is real, but it does not need apple cider vinegar to work.
Your lymphatic system is a network of organs, vessels, and tissues that moves lymph fluid back into the bloodstream. It also helps maintain normal fluid levels, supports immune defense, and filters waste and abnormal cells from lymph fluid.
Lymph nodes are part of this system. They act like filters and often swell when your body is fighting an infection, such as a cold, flu, sinus infection, or skin infection.
That means swollen or tender neck lymph nodes are usually a sign that your immune system is responding to something, not a sign that you need a vinegar wrap.
No. There is no good evidence that apple cider vinegar on the skin can drain lymph nodes.
Apple cider vinegar sits on the surface of the skin. It does not travel through the skin into the lymphatic vessels in a way that “pulls out” fluid, toxins, or buildup.
There is a real therapy called lymphatic drainage massage, but it is different from wrapping vinegar around the neck. Cleveland Clinic describes lymphatic drainage massage as a gentle massage technique used mainly to relieve inflammation related to lymphedema, often after certain health conditions or cancer treatments.
A vinegar-soaked towel is not the same as medically guided lymphatic drainage therapy.
The neck has sensitive skin, blood vessels, muscles, nerves, and lymph nodes close to the surface. Putting acidic liquids on this area, especially under a towel for a long time, can irritate the skin.
Apple cider vinegar is acidic. Cleveland Clinic notes that apple cider vinegar is highly acidic and that undiluted vinegar can cause problems, including burns when it contacts skin. Poison Control also warns that vinegar can cause injury if used improperly.
Do not put undiluted apple cider vinegar on your neck, especially if your skin is sensitive, broken, sunburned, recently shaved, or irritated.
A damp towel around the neck may feel soothing because of pressure, temperature, or the short rest period. But that does not mean apple cider vinegar is draining lymph fluid.
If your issue is mild neck tension, safer options may include:
Mayo Clinic notes that most mild to moderate neck pain improves within 2 to 3 weeks with simple self-care, and that applying ice or heat may help ease symptoms.
If the towel feels good, the benefit is more likely from warmth, pressure, or relaxation — not from vinegar.
Some people may feel lighter after lying down, resting, using a compress, or taking a few deep breaths. But feeling lighter is subjective. It does not prove that lymph nodes drained, toxins left the body, or inflammation disappeared.
Be careful with online phrases like:
The FTC warns that many health and fitness products do not live up to advertising claims that promise weight loss, disease treatment, or improved health.
For most healthy people, the lymphatic system works on its own. You do not need a special vinegar wrap to keep it moving.
Better daily habits include:
CDC guidance for adults recommends regular physical activity, including weekly aerobic activity and muscle-strengthening activity, because movement supports overall health and chronic disease prevention.
Swollen lymph nodes are often caused by common infections and may improve as your body recovers. But they should not be ignored if they are unusual, persistent, or severe.
Talk to a healthcare professional if swollen lymph nodes are:
Cleveland Clinic recommends medical evaluation for swollen lymph nodes that are severe, concerning, not improving, growing rapidly, fixed, draining, or linked with symptoms such as weight loss, night sweats, fever, breathing difficulty, or fatigue.
Avoid an apple cider vinegar neck wrap if you have:
Do not use vinegar as a substitute for medical care if you have swollen lymph nodes, neck pain, infection symptoms, or unexplained swelling.
If your goal is relaxation or mild neck tension relief, try safer options first.
Cleveland Clinic notes that warmth may help ease discomfort from swollen lymph nodes, but treatment depends on the underlying cause.
Apple cider vinegar does not drain lymph nodes, detox the body, or remove “buildup” from the neck.
A vinegar-soaked towel may feel cool or soothing for a short time, but it can also irritate or burn sensitive skin. The safer approach is to avoid undiluted vinegar on the neck and use evidence-based care instead.
If your neck lymph nodes are swollen, painful, growing, hard, fixed, or linked with fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, trouble breathing, or severe fatigue, get medical advice instead of relying on a viral remedy.
